Wow... so it is based on Debian Wheezy. I thought they will create SteamOS from scratch.

It seems they have used Debian... Wonder if someone on BA could put a custom Arch Linux version together...

What are the chances of them open-sourcing the steam-specific parts? If I recall correctly the linux version of steam is still a blob.

Here's a torrent link for it, on ThePirateBay.
Link removed, don't link to torrent sites!

or just the magnet link (http://tinyurl.com/p6swhsc) in case TPB changes domains again.

So anyone know a definite buildnumber of this or is it as simple as "Beta 1"?

Had a play about with it. Desktop side is pratically useless atm. No real administersting to be done on that side. I'll be gaming on my media rig with 7 for now Valve.

I can't boot SteamOS via Virtualbox using UEFI. It somehow loaded a UEFI shell:

How do I boot SteamOS via UEFI?

Theirs a guide on reddit to do a non UEFI boot. I'll find it once i'm home. I had to use it to boot from my usb as SteamOS wouldnt detect the UEFI on my system.

Edit: non uefi here: http://www.reddit.com/r/SteamOS/comment ... h_steamos/

that's vbox's efi shell, it's only compatible with certain OSes.

In VMware 10 it boots (if you set firmware to EFI manually), but only to the desktop, Steam doesn't start (which is expected as it requires an NVidia card)

First, you cannot install SteamOS on VirtualBox since it requires NVIDIA support, 4 GB RAM, and a 500 GB hard drive. I don't think you could have made a VHD that big...

Last , 4GB & a 500GB hdd is no problem for a VM (if you use an expanding disk) the only problem would be the requirement for a NVIDIA card

It's Linux man, you can install whatever video adapter drivers you want, even VirtualBox's guest additions.

Oh, also, does anyone know definitively if SteamOS will lead to decent open-source graphics drivers (for Linux but also Windows)? Because currently, the only decent ones for gaming are the proprietary ones. I'm fine with using nvidia's proprietary driver, but open-source is always great, and the community-based open-source graphics drivers are kinda bad (not through any fault of the developers').
