OS/400 anyone?

Post by sapperlott »

Hi guys!

Anyone with IBM OS/400 experience here? I'm fooling around with an old AS/400e 170 that we inherited with the location at our local Hackerspace here in Stuttgart. Looks like it's installed with OS/400 V4R3. Until now I couldn't do much with it because I had no 5250 twinax terminal handy. I'll pick one up tomorrow and see how far I can get.

If anyone has some V4R3 media handy, that would be totally awesome! Would save me the trouble of hunting down a 16GB QIC tape to pull a backup of the installed system (given that it still is in a working state after all these years). IBM Client Access (Express) V4R5 would also be very nice to have.

I can offer V5R2 media (German) if anyone's interested. It'll only run for 70 days though if you have no matching license key for your machine.

Well I know that in germany rzkh.de offers free AS/400 accounts and has a forum too. I guess that could be a good source of information?
They also have a starting book in german, "AS/400 für Einsteiger" (warning: ~900Kb PDF).

@Echoes89:
Thanks for the link. I'd already found Holger's site. Lots of info there indeed.

@orsg:
Yup - there are some interesting concepts involved in these beasts. But unless you got an active service contract you're bound to the release that came with your machine. Either that or you're comfortable with re-installing the OS every 70 days ;)

It also pays off to take a really close look at the machine configuration. Depending on the model and the configuration your console options vary greatly. My machine will only take a original "dumb" twinax 5250 terminal as its main console (it's got the 2720 card installed). With other cards (e.g. the 2745) you get serial Operations Console which basically seems to be TN5250 over a serial SLIP connection. Newer models offer LAN console out of the box which is most desirable.

If I finally make it to 10 posts and get FTP access I guess I'll upload my German V5R2 media unless it's already there. I'll let you know if/when I get a login prompt on my machine.

You can upload with less than 10 posts, actually. Look at the bottom of your "ftp servers" page.
I can't see any AS/400 stuff on the server (but I just gave a quick look).

Of course make sure it's abandonware.

Are you sure? I can't even see the "FTP Servers" page because of lacking privileges.

As for the definition of Abandonware - is there a particular definition this forum adheres to? In case of OS/400 V5R2 - IBM doesn't seem to support or sell it anymore. On top of that it seems legal to share the installation media since it requires a machine dependent license key. Without it, it just goes into a 70-day-trial mode.

OS/400 is still maintained and updated, but IBM renamed it to i5/OS. However if you have an OS/400 version that is outdated and not supported anymore then you're free to upload it, as long as you upload it with proper binaries/tapes/packaging and with proper filenames so I can decrypt what you uploaded and tag it accordingly.

V5R2 ended its support in 2007.

Hi,

Once i will have 10 posts, i would be able to provide some versions in french, so it should also work in english.

- V5R2 (about 15 iso made by a friend)
- V5R4 (dozens of ISO files)
- V6R1 too !

I am looking for old V4R5 and V4R4 versions in french in order to really clean two of my old machines.

Thanks!
