You need to patch/res-edit the graphics driver for that. If you're using the standard VGA driver, it's VGA.DRV.

Come what may ... :|

You can do quite nice efforts with makeover. In one of Brian Livingstone's books on Windows, there was a limited version of makeover, which allowed you to change the first two icons.

Windows had then a long and short bar, for the system menus, but this allowed you to change these to an open door (for the system menu, the top one), and to a paper clip (for the document menu (which was usually an MDI window).

I have a modified version of vga.drv, with these and a few other mods. It was appropriately called 'camel.drv', after one of the icons in it. The yellow warning icon was turned into a smilie with eight eyes!

Even changing the first two icons would have the desired effect.

It really is easy to change these by changing the video driver, so the effect is easy to dust off.

Those bitmaps for the styles are in the Winsrv.dll.
Doesn't matter if Windows 3.x or NT 3.x, you just need to edit the 3.x files with 16-bit-resource hacker.

You can replace the system button and other things in this file ;)
