okay so heres the deal - have been working on vista recently and have managed to squeeze the bloated git down to 543mb.
the problem is now when i work on the .wim files i remove content yet the .install.wim file increases. i removed 400mb from the file yet it increased by 20 how and why does it do this? i could make vista micro if i could work this out!

It is probably like an Access database, where deleting stuff doesn't actually delete it, but rather marks it as deleted (you can't resize/reorganize the database while you are working on it). There is probably a function like compact/repair for wim files.

The size gets bigger after you do imagex /unmount /commit?

you must rebuild the wim-image to get it smaller.

i have tried the above - building an image from the mounted image - get an error everytime!
i did though copy the mounted folder and then create an image but it was still bigger than the original!!

Try Using V-Lite.

Yes, vlite is the only option. After removing stuff an making your tweaks to the wim, it asks to apply "on the fly" ( writing changes only into the xml file ) or to rebuild the thing.

By rebuilding you can get a CD-sized Vista Disk with no problems.

Trouble begins when you substracted something that you will later need, because there is no way to bring it back.

To "vliten" a Vista is a horror and be prepared to burn several isos, and re-install Vista on a regular base.

Better off with VPC or Vmware to test this all.

.. did not re-build the image.
run
Code:
imagex /?
:)
& btw, it will not do vlite's job.

543Mb is the smallest modded Vista I have seen so far, I think the smallest before this one was near 700Mb called Vista Lite... would be interesting to see how it performed if you manage to fix the size issue

next vLite version allows you to remove a lot more (16 bit support, dump creation and so on). Perhaps you can get it smaller

Indeed it will, but it'll make a completely crippled Vista. An XP of the same size would have so much more functionality.
