Hi !

I would like to buy a Pocket PC (in fact, a smartphone) and really want to install Crossbow, the future mobile OS.
So... what is the last build number which was released ? Do you have an idea ? Do you know where we could find info about it ?

thanks

You dont install Windows CE to a device like you do Windows on a desktop.

Thats right. Most of these devices come with unflashable ROM so you can't update it (hence the ROM). You get a final version and thats it.

I think I have a Crossbow beta downloaded from another site months ago but just don't know how to check its build number...And I'm not sure if they have newer versions now either.

Yeah, it is possible, but that requires either booting the kernel from within WinCE (like loadlin does), or reflashing the ROM with the Linux kernel and filesystem.

Most of the devices actually comes with FLASHABLE rom. Even the old Palm III had that feature.

So, you can change the bootrom, and the whole OS. (I actually run Familiar linux w. GPE on my ipaq 3630)

The problem here is not that. Every device has it's own build OS (with drivers, etc.). So you can't run device#1-s OS on device#2, even if the architecture matches. The problem lies in the fact, every device has it's own way handling the screen, touch panel, buttons, sound, etc.

OFF: If someone interested in running linux on PPC, familiar.handhelds.org is the place to go.

[off-topic] This reminds me of the time when I was trying to run Linux or NetBSD on my HP Jornada 720. That didn't work out for me, so I changed to a PDA running Linux out of the box... [/off-topic]

Thats kinda of an unfair statement as the distro has not come out yet.

Personally, an Axim x30 is enough for most people and its only ~100 USD.

I rather vote for HP hx4700. For the same price of the x30 you get a 480x640 screen (compared to x30's 240x320), CF slot (plus the SDIO) and 1800mAh battery (compared to dell's 900mAh) too, and there's an actively maintained Linux for that machine.

Mfha, truly. But in this country, it's rare to find any kind of Zaurus PDA-s and those few lucky [censored] Zaurus users are not willing to sell them.

As a side note, Windows CE 3, 4 and... whatever 5's called (I think) are available as images, I have some bootable CDs I created around here somewhere that I can boot them from, I think it's an emulator of some kind though I was never really sure... they seem to work under DOS and I think they came with FreeDOS or something...

Thank you for your answers.

I found an archive. There are 30 files :
sck-wm6.7z.001 1 424 Kb
sck-wm6.7z.002 1 424 Kb
sck-wm6.7z.003 1 424 Kb
...

I though they were floppy images so I mounted them in VMWare, but they are not...
