Hi, I have a Macintosh Classic M1420 that's refusing to install system 7.5.3. It's always giving out errors like "It is now safe to switch off your Macintosh." or "Sorry, a system error occurred." Then it just spits out the disk. I have 4MB of RAM installed and a 120MB Maxtor HDD.

how about 6.0.8 or 7.0.1?

Otherwise Id probably ask the 68k Macintosh Liberation Army https://68kmla.org/forums/

Check your installation media. Installation woes usually begin with floppy errors, which often lead to cryptic error messages or crashes. With 4MB of RAM, you won't be able to run much as the System Folder will probably take up to about 2.6MB on its own. System 6 would be the best OS for that hardware.

Okay. Might as well buy something like a 68040 powered mac. But thanks for telling me about the best system for the hardware.

I've found, featurewise, that 7.1 works "best" on my Classic, so you could try that. I did have to make new installation floppies though as the old set had degraded to the point of random read errors and what not.

Well, I lubricated the floppy drive and that seemed to work.
I'm installing 7.0.1 to avoid performance issues. WinImage works great for writing mac floppies on my computer.
