What do you think about these builds and their features and stability? Do they give us a hard time with drivers?
How does each go and how they relate to each other?

I'd quite like to give one of those a try, so I'm figuring out were I should begin.

Cheers! :)

I ran all of these back during the beta. I had pretty much equal levels of difficulty with all of them to be honest. My issues were pretty much that the Radeon x600 in my laptop at the time (HP zd7000a) would refuse to be detected properly until the drivers were forced, and of course Sound Blaster Audigy NX issues.

That shouldn't deter you from having a good time with them I think though :)

I liked 5231 over 5219 because of some stability issues that were solved, but then again, it could be my "odd" computer, because in the old Longhorn days, build 4015 ran like a charm for me, had almost no mem leak and accepted all of my drivers.

It's great to hear about your experience with those builds
I'm particularly concerned about the network card and bluetooth: do you have any insight, tips?... (XP drivers? Or the Vista driver engine was already fully implemented?)

Cheers!

^^ well damn! get installing....lol

spend the weekend with 5112....start Monday with 5219 and for humpday, hit up 5231...lol kills three builds in 1 week, and gives you a taste of all three!

perfect scenario for having "an old dog of a PC" kicking around

hehehe it will be a while before I can ask for access to the servers :)
These builds aren't as available as they used to be anymore :)

Thanks, LuridPhathom! :) That's really generous of you: I can't thank you enough!!!

You were right, dj_cityboy! :)

edit:
Any recommendations? Does this build require any particular date in the BIOS? Any time-bomb limitations?

:) Cheers!!! (I'm carrying quite a smile, now!)

No problem :)

And yes, you do need to change the BIOS.

viewtopic.php?f=6&t=604

I just set the year to 2004 and it works for me.

Thanks, guys! :)

LuridPhathom: I only managed to get one of the parts... for the other files (and even the one I've got, now) all I see is a blank page when I try to download... Bummer...

Right now I'm away from home for a few days, but I can't wait to take this out of the laptop and start playing with it. I'll keep you guys up to date!

Windows Vista 5112 doesn't show nice performance indicators, and it even doesn't have DX10, but 5219 is the first build that got DX10, but it doesn't work properly.

Do you think 5219 or 5231 perform better?

I think yes, DX10 and all graphics libraries has significant changes.

I there everybody! :)

I just returned from vacations and am installing 5112 on my desktop as we speak.
I'll keep you guys posted on how it goes.

Cheers!

edit 1:
Installed like a breeze: it took a while, but without hiccups.
Can't find an antivirus that works with it, though, not even AVG 7.0.338 which is supposed to work just fine... Any advices?

I left the AV alone for now, and I've been installing drivers: not a problem so far... We'll see. :)

Got drivers for everything working easily. Apparently it can deal with both XP and Vista drivers. The only one I didn't install yet is a bluetooth dongle, and there's a hd audio device that I can't figure out what it is...

Still can't install an antivirus;
In spite of having an ATI Radeon HD 3450, can't find the way of having WDM effects, not even with the beta drivers ATI released for Beta 1... Any ideas?

Cheers

edit:
Managed to install AVG Free 8.0, with the compatibility box for XP ticked for the installation file.
(Tried the same trick for Avira and for AVG 8.5, but didn't work. It did work for some driver installs, though.)

The UI in 5112 and 5219 is pretty good, other than that all three listed builds don't offer all that much in the way of intereresting features.

Yes, it lacks in interesting features.
On the other hand it seems to be fairly stable and quite fast!

...not trouble-free, although. :)

Managed to install MSN Messenger 7.5 (with some patching) and iTunes 6.0.5...
On the AV side, AVG auto-updates from 8.0 to 8.5 and stops working... So, no AV again for now...

(But I must say that I'm happy and surprised with the drivers/hardware issues: I even managed to install with no problems an obscure PCI TV tuner, a cam, the inboard SoundMAX drivers -with some persuasion- etc..)

Tiago, if you do install all 3 builds, can you tell me which one is the least buggy? I really like the pre-Vista builds and want to try to use it as a main OS for one of my computers.
