quite frankly, is a mess.

And I have been thinking and think I have come up with some sort of solution.

I have a major problem with software vendors not supplying or supplying useless uninstallers that actually leave a ton of remnants behind in Windows (Read: Symantec & General Spyware).

Wouldn't it be great that when you install programs the OS would record the exact steps that the software installer undertook? So that you could actually 'roll back' any software you didn't want. This would mean that vendors wouldn't have to include an uninstaller at all and also it would make getting rid of 'nasties' a lot easier. It would also ensure that no remnants of software would be left behind on your system.

While I'm on with it, I'm sure you could extend virtualisation technology to sandbox all newly installed applications. Then later, have the option to get rid or write to your windows installation. Again, would make less registry / useless file clutter & also reduce the risk of spyware etc...

Thoughts...?

Didn't Norton used to make a utility that did exactly this? Back in...the 90's sometime?

There are a couple of similar ones, such as Sandboxie, but it really would be great to actually have it implemented as 'the' way to install / uninstall apps in Windows.

They still do, its called the Norton Removal Tool... Its not perfect, but its still far better at complete removal than the built in uninstaller.

*sigh* This whole communication thing is getting tiring.

They used to make a tool that would record all the changes that any installer would make, then let you roll back those changes. It wasn't just for Symantec's software (the company that makes Norton).

There's plenty of tools about on the web that take snapshots of your system including registry changes along with files.
Arkosoft System Snapshot being one of them.

My first PC had Quarterdeck CleanSweep for Windows 95 on it, which would detect when you were installing something and a little box would come up asking if you wanted it to monitor the installation and record the changes. The program then had a list of all the installed programs that had been monitored in this way and you could uninstall them though it (I think it was recommended that you used the Windows uninstaller first and then CleanSweep to pick up anything that it missed). Of course, I suppose anything that got added after installation eg on first-run was missed. I think Symantec acquired Quarterdeck and sold CleanSweep under the Norton brand for a while afterwards, but it hasn't been around for a while now.
