My mum's laptop has a virus on it that causes it to have a hard power off as soon as the windows desktop loads, it is not a hardware program because I ran the laptop without problems off a old ubuntu 5.10 live cd I had lieing around, disk didn't see the computers hard drive :( Would a WinPE cd detect a USB stick so I can copy off her data and reinstall XP,

I personally don't see what's wrong with AVG. Even though I use Avira on my main PC and AVG on my backup.
I'd like to know more about your hate for AVG.

AVG causes too many problems with software I run so I use avast! Home edition. Its totally free and works like a charm. I used to recommend AVG but now I recommend avast!.

If we are still recommending anti virus programs, I'd recommend Kaspersky anyday.

I find Avira to be lighter on resources and when looking at reviews, it's ranked as a top competitor. Since it's free, I don't see why I shouldn't use it over AVG.

I use AVG.

As far as free goes, you have three choices.

Avast
AVG
Avira

Avast requires email registration, AVG doesn't, and I don't know about Avira.
