I woke my laptop up this morning, and logged on, to find i hadn't closed out my RDC terminal window. heres what I saw:
Image

I wonder if anyone running vista could do the same thing (hibernate their system with a remote desktop client running, and load the system back up to see what kind of window appears when trying to reconnect.)

I had RDC'd into my Fileserver\download server\webserver\FTPserver\mediaserver running Server 2003 180 day trial (after 180 days, ill have built a new server, so i don't need the full thing)

Moreorless. There are still XP logos in Vista, the Windows Server 2007 Foundation screenshot still had the 2003 computer monitor logo (thing...), so on.

Not suprising

Yup. Just old bitmaps, you needn't run for your bomb shelters.

Up until Windows 7 the Add Font dialog box had been the same since Windows 3.

I wonder if it's using XP's logon dialog box because you were connected to an XP machine?

No, its not the case. It lost the connection with remote machine, so no logos and information from this until reconnected. Just the RDP box still uses some old bitmaps. Putting this to taskforce can also be good idea. But yeah, many windowses contain things from older windowses so nothing new here. Good example is to make a new shortcut and use shell32.dll as icon set. You will see many icons from 98 and 2000/me.

they probably didn't want to redo that part of the system code, so they just kept copying and pasting it from one build to the next, without even caring about updating ... just my $0.02

The only time they would upgrade is when it gets old.

Could that be for compatability options?

I found this in D:\win2k\private\windows\gina\winlogon\win31mig.c
Code:
/****************************** Module Header ******************************\
* Module Name: logon.c
*
* Copyright (c) 1991, Microsoft Corporation
*
* Implements functions to allow a user to control migration of
* Windows 3.1 configuration information from the .INI, .GRP and REG.DAT
* files into the Windows/NT when the logon for the first time.
*
* History:
* 02-23-93 Stevewo      Created.
\***************************************************************************/

And it's in the Windows 2000 codebase.

I believe that even current versions of Windows contain an old DOS components. There was one called "Edlin", which was written as a component for MS-DOS back in the early 1980's. You can try to open the executable, but then the window immediately closes.
