This question has been asked many times, but it really depends on what you think Stable means. By stable do you mean it has to be as stable as Windows XP or stable as in you don't mind if explorer crashes? But in general people say 3718 is the most stable, and most 4xxx builds have the memory leak (4008 is fairly stable though)

Any build less than (<) 4xxx is stable. (What alinux09 said)

Every build has problems with DWM and that won't ever be stable.
If you are not using that, 3718 is good but has the same issues as windows xp w/o a SP or any patch, so alot of programs won't be compatible.

hardware can be an issue as well, i have heard multiple horror stories from people having issues with builds, but other dont have issues, my 4066 and 4074 builds install fine on my test machine every other builds craps out on me no matter what i do, a few other builds will run fine (with some tinkering) but most fail at best...

before i got the test machine i have now (an IBM thinkpad T42) all my builds installed fine on my old desktop i had...all i can guess is that it has to do with hardware...tis my only guess?

That said, in all reality, this is the definitive place for the answer to your question - search.php.

Enjoy!

Longhorn 3718 is very stable.
Longhorn 4074 has a very bad memory leak and crash every 30 minutes. Worse than that, it reboot without a BSOD or anything.

4074 is fine if you kill the unnecessary processes and WinFS.

4074 can't be stable by defenition. It's the most buggy and unstable build of Windows so far, disposed to accidental halts and crashes.

Then, 4093 worked very well for me, it was much more stable since they stripped down Longhorn by this time.

But the most stable builds are 3683, 3706 and 3718 since (by their architecture) they are very similiar to Windows XP, based on the same (only slightly modified) kernel and APIs.

3718 is the most stable because it's code is very close to windows XP's coding wich was very stable. 4074 is also ok in stabilty

For me 4008 was the most stable build for me. I don't have too many experience with the Builds below 400x, so 4008 is the best for me. 4074 and 4093 were very funny builds, but they had very annoying bugs, for example the memory leak.

I used 4008 a long time as main OS in 2004. :)

3718 is not the closest to XP, 3683 is.
It's stable and quick, once you've disabled all the cruft.

4074 isn't stable :
I have it on my VirtualPC and he crash several time(not my it's not my fault

For strange reason,a lot of people vote for him

In my opinion, 4008,3718 and 4011 are the best
