I have windows seven build 7000, and when i first installed it, i installed steam as well as left 4 dead and team fortress 2. i opened them both up, and they both opened fine, and i configured all of my settings. however, the second time i try to open either games, they both don't launch, and for tf2 its: hl2.exe has stopped working, and for l4d, its left4dead.exe has stopped working. i rebooted, reinstalled steam and the games, but it doesn't work.

Windows 7 is in the day of present really unstable, this holds on that it is NOT created for gaming.

Back on the subject; the problem you have could be a writing error in your registry.

That said, I can remember back when I was foolish enough to try gaming on this machine, but too cheap to pay for games off Steam, I used an app that would allow you to run the game files without steam... worth a try...

I believe it was a steam emulator. It's not an app, it's more of a few dll's that mask as being an official steam process. That thing is great, uses way less resources than Steam. The emulator now has support to play games off of GCF's.

Too secure as in you can't hack it and steal the games for free? Thats kinda the point.

There are "altered" versions that allow you to download the games for free, you just can't play on dedicated servers.

The downloadable games through cracked clients are however limited due to server side protection, and patches have to be constantly updated every time a steam update is released. I have brought quiet a few games through Steam as I like it as a platform, and to me criticising it just because they are protecting their games a lot better than most other game studios(which is their entitlement) is ignorant of what steam really offers to an end user
