You need to format the partition from within setup, theres an explanation of how to do so on DjRobs site.

When at format screen select DISK 0 and not the partition to proceed with format, when doesn't work try format trick.

Use this only when at the select partition screen doesn't want to proceed.

2. When setup says: Welcome to Setup press F10, this will bring up the command prompt.
3. Type: Diskpart
4. Type: Select Disk 0
5. Type: Clean
6. Type: Create Partition Primary
7. Type: Select partition 1
8. Type: Active
9. Type: Exit (2 times)
10. Reboot the Virtual Machine (or real)
11. Now run setup as normal.
12. Optional:
Press F10 and then type at: C:\format C: /fs:NTFS /q (example)
Switches:
Format C: = Formatting Drive C (First Hard Drive)
/fs:NTFS = Use File System, New Technology File System (NTFS)

Damn, the error slipped in from the previous site.
To bring up the command prompt, use SHIFT+F10

About the error:
This error is very common in the early builds of Longhorn.
But for some it pops-up everytime or sometimes never.

1) Did you redownloaded it? Yes -> Go to 2, No -> Go to the FTP
2) Did you try it in a VM first? Yes -> Go to 3, No -> Try this first
3) Did the VM worked? (VMWare or VPC) Yes -> Go to 4, No -> You're iso is corrupt, try to redownload again and try again
4) Try it on that real PC, did it work? Yes -> Go and play with the build, No -> Then it will NOT work on that PC, that is the risk of Beta tester.

Also, do not dual-boot it with Vista or something it WILL fail, that build of Vista will fail to boot.
Try XP and then install this build.
Or to be safe, try an empty HD, partition it with the instructions given and then try to install.

If this all fail, then I suggest you give this build up and try another, maybe 5112.

DjRob is right that it will fail. 5048 has an older bootloader than vista rtm. The setup can't write to the newer vista bootloader causes the setup to fail.
Also, a corrupted wim file will cause it to fail.

This build gave alot people problems when they first installed it. My advice is not to install it in a productive environment (your main computer).
