Hey all,

I have a question. Do you think they'll make WMP12 available for Windows XP? Or will it be a 7 exclusive?

If I were to guess I'd say that WMP12 will be available for Vista and 7 only. Windows XP will be supported fully until April 2009 and have extended suppport until 2014 iirc. Extended support means security updates only, nothing new added like service packs, features or support for new MS apps.

Microsoft says that XP is supported until April 2009 after that it will be placed on life support only.

I don't think WMP12 will be released for XP, not sure about about IE8 but I wouldn't bet on it. For all intents and purposes XP dies in April 2009, the extended support is pretty much just critical security updates.

No, XP with no service packs has not been supported for a long time - full support finishes next year and extended support in 2014. Extended support for XP with SP2 will finish some time before then, they expect you to use the latest SP version for full support. Also remember that even if they don't release it for XP someone might still figure out how to get it to run.

Skins don't replicate functionality unfortunately, WMP12 will have inbuilt support for various types of mpeg 2 video formats like DivX XviD and so on

I intend to use XP until 7 RTM's, then I'll decide if I want to upgrade permanently.

My main problem is that XP just performs so well in games. Vista just can't compare.

I have found the opposite, Every 3D mark test that I run comes out higher by 1-2% on Vista (nVidia 8600 GT, newest drivers)

it might be that my computer is from 2003, yet it can play fallout 3 on ultra, as well as Unreal Tournament 3 on the highest setting.

probably just my video card

If it can do that, it has more than enough power to decode video and run Aero

it'll run vista w/ aero just fine. Its just a matter of some games work and some don't.

therefore i don't use vista. I will if SP2 is any good.

I'm of the opinion that its practicaly impossible to move forward without breaking some backwards compatability, this is the main reason that MS takes so long making technical advancements they are more than capable of doing. They are not the only ones though, OpenGL 3.0 was delayed, then delayed some more and eventualliy when it was released in was a pile of crap becuase they needed to keep code in that enabled support for 8-10 year old CAD apps that was incompatable with the code designed to replace it. There needs to come a point where as a programmer you say ok enough is enough, we cannot continue to hold back progress for the sake of some outdated 3rd party crap. If that means breaking stuff, wel grin and bear it, otherwise we move along at a snails pace and hardware starts to overtake software in terms of capabilities. By the time the software has caught up to the hardware, the hardware is either obsolete, or practically useless. The adoption of 64 bit apps is testament to that fact. People do not want to adopt x64 becuase of compatability issues and software engineers are reluctant to code for x64 due to demand. Break it, move on then worry about fixing compatability later. Otherwise you just sit there, stagnating.

From the first release in as NT 3.1 in July 1993, Yeh, 15.5 years old. I suspect it could make 20 years before it's truly on it's way out. A sign of just how good the NT core is.
