I am thinking of upgrading my brothers Windows XP Pro SP3 computer to Server 2003 or Vista. Specs be down below:

Intel Pentium 4 3.0GHz HT
1GB RAM
200GB Hard Drive
Intel GMA900 (915)

I am leaning towards Server 2003 :P. but he has an iPod, and I hear that Server 2k3 doesnt like iTunes. :|, Vista might be slow.. :S

Vista Ultimate (With SP1) will run fine on his System.

Mine is one with just a plain P4 2.8Ghz CPU in it, and it runs fine for all HD Movies, Graphics, and for Need for Speed Underground 2, Most Wanted and Carbon. (Been playing em pretty heavy lately).

If I had more higher quality Ram, my score would be a little more better:

I would stick with XP. Or get 1GB ram more, and run Vista

Maybe if he re-installs XP and installs some patched themes he will be happy?

There exists a patch for server 2003 that makes it more friendly as a home operating system. (Maybe somebody remembers it)

He won't be able to do any games made after 2003 with that GPU...

So what I would do;
1. Tell him you can re-install XP
2. Tell him you will install server 2003
3. Tell him to get more ram and a better GPU; so he can actually use the new features of Vista

To Alexsis; your statements are somewhat misleading because of your high GPU score...

Ah, I didn't see he was still using an IGP and not a Dedicated GPU.

After seeing that, I would stick with XP SP3 until you atleast get a new Graphics Card, running Vista with an old IGP is pretty much pointless.

do server 2003 r2

apply the xp converter patch:
http://www.windowsxlive.net/windows-server-2003-xp-conversion-pack

itunes runs fine on server 2003 enterprise edition r2 with or without the conversion pack

You should also consider the fact that The GMA900 won't run Aero properly.

You can run vista on it, but make sure you kill the SuperFetch service so the ram usage is lower(about ~200-400MB lower)

why not have it enabled and have it when oyu need it - if i remember correctly when you open a program that wants to use a lot of ram superfetch is the first thing unloaded anyway.

I dont t like Vista personallt, but I think it'll run fine, but I am highly favored towards Server 2k3 because its reliable, and it has VLKs

Thats true, but i've found out if you disable it the programs/games will indeed start 2-10 seconds slower but some games need the memory now not 30-60 seconds leter, so if you want that programs boot/start 2 seconds faster but have to wait before superfetch sees that a program needs more mem and unloads the prefetch 30 seconds later you can enable superfetch. But if you disable superfetch you will see that on the pc's performance, especially if you only got slow 1GB ddr1 pc3200 ram.

I would add in an extra 1GB of RAM, and upgrade it to Vista. No use putting Win2k3 on a box like that <_<

Well I got vista installed on a Celeron 1.0Ghz with 512Mb PC133 ram, it ran like (bleep), But on that system it should be fine, of cause you could just use VLite to get it running really fast. Upgrading I think is a good idea because as Windows 7 is inching closer, program support for XP SP3 is starting to fade away, Soon games are gonna be using DX10 ..etc

BTW: People think your wildeye (a banned member) because your system is the same as his

COD4Playa is Wildeye. IP is the same, and he even told me when he originally set up this account. COD4Playa is now banned anyway.

Plus the fact -

1) He posted his "system specs" twice.
2) He claimed to be some guy called Chris, which he posted on another forum that "James" was an alias
3) He posted same ISP etc

I could go on but I'd be disturbing the peace :/

I think we can lock this topic now given that the original poster is no longer here to get the responses (as said earlier in the topic, he was banned - he really needs the "banned" thing put under his name that usually seems to get put on so as to avoid confusion though).
