Hi,

I have a machine that (sadly) isent vista aero suited - so i stuck with this ugly #"%"#ยค#" (thing) called Vista basic theme.. (i truly and utterly hate it)...

Anyway, i was wondering if anyone have tried to use the Vista-beta2 theme :

On Vista Ultimate ?

Could you not copy the theme files from beta2 and paste them into the vista ultimate?

save the old aero theme as a different name or something and then use this one?

it's going to have been signed by MS so there should be no need to even do the theme crack.

P.S the themes' directory is, %systemroot%:\Windows\Resources\Themes

If I remember, 5308 was a pre-beta 2 release. Beta 2 was 5384 I believe.

Just be wary that if you are downloading beta 2, it may be a different theme to 5308 like in the screenshot.

It will not work. The theme is built totally different.

I doubt it will work, your best bet would be to extract all the image resources from the theme files, and then use them to build your own "Vista Compatible" theme.

Haha, funny this topic came up. I had been working on a 53xx port for a while because I think that style rules over RTM. It's mainly 5308 inspired, but I thought about adding in some nicer parts from 5270 as well, and wrapping it into some kind of matrix. I've been so busy that I hadn't thought about it, but I do plan on finishing it. And if there's some interest, that's more incentive.

And yes, it is not just a "replace msstyle file" or "swap resources" job. Takes a lot more than that, especially trying to get the shellstyle right. Almost there...!

Here's some (unfinished) screenshots...

Looks promising.
I was always a fan of the Beta 1 Visual Style...

Me too. All the builds from Beta 1 until (I want to say... 5342) were very cool before they changed to the more tame design. And to many, these were tame compared to longhorn! Oh well.

Thanks!

Once I finish the stream, the aero buttons will look like that. That screenshot is aero without transparency. My screenshot was basic in a virtual machine.

Oh, right, right. So you're looking for the faux-aero like appearance in basic. Well, there might be something similar out there already, like at dA. I'm not sure though, or what quality it would be. I'll look around, though. If not, maybe I could whip something up.

You can always select the Aero theme and turn off transparency, change the window color, disable certain effects, etc, and it would look similiar except for icons.

Hi Bob, i think you are missing the point, my target computer is restricted to Vista Basic, not even standard work.

Aka. i want another theme :-)

Ok sorry misunderstood. What is your graphics card? If its an Intel Integrated one, there's a driver hack that lets you run aero.
Otherwise, you could try looking on Deviantart

On my target machine its a Ati Radeon M6 Mobile with 32mb, besides full aero will be heavy as hell since its a small laptop, allready checked devi. but i find it it overwhelming annoying to browse..
