I installed 7 (6801 of course) on my computer (yay!), and went to Windows Update to see if there were any Ultimate Extras... but I was shocked, bedazzled even! There was an update for "Windows 7 Pre-Beta" (KB958644), I thought that MS never released updates for beta products?

maybe it is just a easier way for them to upgrade through the betas without reinstalling the whole thing. did you notice anything different afterwords?

They did release some for the Vista betas (the widely-available ones at least), they seem to patch the critical security issues that are patched in the released versions while the beta is the latest public version. This is probably that patch they released recently for all other supported versions of Windows that they seemed keen for people to install quickly as they released it outside of the usual monthly schedule.

Well, this build must be quite old then?

It runs great... I never expected it to run like this. AND there are updates, I was as surprised as you.

I have all the drivers installed, some of them failed the first go 'round but they installed and work fine now. Except the audio drivers, I had to roll those back fromt he WU installed version to the ones that came with 6801.

EVERY peice of software I've installed works. What a pleasant surprise.

It's much faster than Vista as well, and I'm glad they've stripped some of the applications that I never used out of it.

Very welcome changes include:

Updates to the Resource Monitor
A link directly to display properties from the desktop context menu
Simpler wireless networking
Internet Explorer 8 (I hadn't looked at it too much until now, the Accelerators are great)
DWM supposedly uses less RAM
They've somehow rescued UAC, something I'm sure many people would agree was a big piece of [censored]
The new organizer for the system tray is nice
The new compact view for WMP is great for videos

I can't remember if Vista did, but this remembers my monitor settings, now when I come home and plug my monitor into my laptop it just sets it all back up the way it was before without me having to press a single button.

It seems like Windows has become less of a chore.

Anyone screw around with the libraries yet?

I also find this seems quicker than Vista, I may keep this installed until the next build leaks ;)

I was thinking the same thing, and that's something I don't think I've ever been able to say about any Microsoft pre-release software.

It seems so much more responsive. Surprisingly faster.

Critical security patch that was released last week. I remember reading that Win 7 pre-beta would be affected as well.

Windows 7 Ultimate is probably just a brand name and nothing else... Just like how you can change it so it says Windows 7 Starter yet everything else is still intact.

It wasn't unheard of for the Longhorn Beta's to get patches (not very common, but not unheard of).
They're almost always security fixes, though.

Is there a way to take these downloaded updates from the temp folder and upload them to the server?

You should be able to get the .msu URL from the WU log. Then you can download it from the web.

MS won't release the M3 to public. Perhaps a Beta2 Build in 2009

Apparently, they will release Beta 1 to the public, which is scheduled for Mid-December.

What security software are you using? Neither OneCare nor avg have worked for me. Would save me time going through all the rest if you could give me the heads up :)

Thanks

this will makes no sense. MS will release a Beta at connect and to Technet and MSDN subsribers but not to the public.

That would be OK...if it goes out to Technet, for sure it will spread around.

If I used any security software I would let you know. :P
I just shut off the anti-virus notifications.

I am using the free Avast! 4.8 for Vista on this W7 build, haven't had any problems w/ 4.8, beware using Avast! 4.6 broke my install though.

McAfee Suite doesn't work either. Although I didn't try any workarounds.

Actually, they have said that there will be 1 beta, which will be publicly available.

Also,
I am using Symantec AntiVirus v. 10.2.0.298 x64, and it is working great.
