I recently got the WHS set from Microsoft, and when trying to boot up the DVD to install it, it will not boot. I can boot Server 2k3/XP/Longhorn as I have done on this machine before, but the WHS DVD won't boot.

Am I doing something wrong  ?

Maybe the DVD is bad. What is the error? Or does it just not boot...?

If the PC just boots as normal, is the CD drive set above the hard drive in the Bios settings?

Everything is normal, I just tried to boot into Server 2k3 installation, and it worked. I will try another copy. All it says is NO OS FOUND, seeing as the HDD is blank.

Have you checked the Bios boot settings then? (should be under something like "boot priority" - check CD is above HD) You are definitely using the "Server Installation DVD" of the set, an the machine has a DVD drive? (just checking, I'm sure you are!)

Weird :S MS's own discs are usually fine so I doubt it's that - do you have another PC you can test it in?

Turns out Server 2k3 won't install either :S as soon as it reboots after the intial setup (i.e. into the GUI installation) it just presents a black screen.

I think my DVD Drive or HDD may be messed up.

I had that problem once.....it was my hard drive. As soon as I replaced it, it installed fine.

I'm set on it being the HDD, I've tried to install Server 2k3 multiple times now, and keep getting disk errors or file errors each time it is meant to boot to the GUI setup.

It's weird since little over a month ago, I installed LH 4074 alongside XP and both worked fine.

I've run chkdsk and it spent nearly 2 hours "fixing multiple errors" but nothing works...

I would think that it's the DVD drive if you couldn't even get into the installers at first. You don't have another one laying around or one that you can pull out of another computer just to test it?

Forgot to say I tried a different drive, however they happen to be the exact same model pulled from the same model of PC and are quite old...

Update: w00t, I took out the harddrive and formatted it via USB and Server 2k3 decided it would install. However is there a way to now get WHS to install from within Server 2k3, seeing as WHS still won't boot :x

No.

It makes some critical settings (harddrive partitioning and so on) in the Windows PE.
Also it will NOT dual-boot.
It must be installed as a single OS.

Also is your harddrive big enough?

Technically it should install because WHS = Server 2003.
