Windows Aero does not work in Windows 8 Build 7850

Post by TheBetaFan18329 »

Hi. Whenever I try to use the Aero theme on Windows 8 Build 7850, it comes up with a black screen. :(
I am using VMware Workstation 14 and I installed VMware tools. Can someone find a fix for this please?

I think he wants to use VMWare.
What gpu does the host have? What operating system? Did you try updating the host's drivers? Is hardware acceleration set to full?
Can you make sure that 'Accelerate 3d graphics' is enabled in VMWare settings?
Is DX11 working on the host? Have you tried using D3D instead?
Does aero work in other VMs?
If none of these suggestions work, can you post your vmware.log? Please attach it instead of copying and pasting.

Make sure to use VMWare 6.5/7.x compatibility mode and a version of VMWare Tools intended for 6.5 (you can get it from TCB for example)
Also known as Cvolton elsewhere...

Is there a reason they should avoid 14?

They can use 14 just fine, they just have to use compatibility mode, which is what I advised them to do.

So I installed the VMware 6.5.4 drivers and I tried to turn on Aero and I got an error.

The 6.5 drivers are indeed not WDDM-compliant and as such won't run Aero (only the DCE in some Longhorn builds). Try the WDDM drivers from 7.0 which are designed to run Aero in Vista and above.

I installed the VMware 7.0 drivers and I got Aero to work! ;)
