Enable ReFS in Windows 8.1 x64

Post by 878625670 »

We know ReFS has been supported since Windows Server 2012, but how we can make it worked in Windows 8.1 x64?
One of my best friends found out the way to Enable ReFS in Windows 8.1 x64:

Code: Select all

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\MiniNT]
"AllowRefsFormatOverNonmirrorVolume"=dword:00000001

Save the code above as a .reg file and import it. Then go to "This PC" and enjoy ReFS!

Verified working. Interesting, seeing as the MiniNT key doesn't exist prior to this on 8.1 x64. I wonder how many hidden little bits in 8.1 exist like this.

Also can confim working within a VM. I do wonder of what use this is to most users, as some features are completely missing from ReFS, like support for 8.3 filenames and alternate data streams. The only real advantages seem to be a 16 Exabyte max file size and a 1 Yottabyte max volume size (NTFS can do 256TB max file size and 256TB max volume size in NT6.2 and up).

Found a serious issue with using this work-around. This breaks dism's online functions within 8.1. Found that out when I wanted to do an online restorehealth operation. Delete the key if you get an error along the following lines: "DISM does not support servicing Windows PE with the /Online option."

As such, this completely makes having ReFS available on the client software a waste of time, and could potentially cause data loss.

The MDL ReFS Client repack has been updated for Windows 8.1, and the older version survived the upgrade from Windows 8.0 on my workstation.

ReFS works for me on Windows 8.1, but I'm still using the driver files from Windows Server 2012.

After adding the Registry Key, the system will think that it is WinPE itself, System Recovery Options (including System Restore) will not function and some services cannot start.
So it is important to restore the registry after you finished formatting your disk to ReFS.

Am just curious of there's any advantage over NTFS for a consumer to enable ReFS.
