I'll look into it. Truthfully, I haven't been able to reliably get DWM working on pre-reset builds without specific hardware or drivers. I'll throw together an old test machine that was able to run 4074 DWM and see what happens.

On VMware DWM works for me with default kernel, but with patched I haven't got it.

Hmmm I'm somewhat surprised that it doesn't work. I was able to get DWM working on 5048 without issue, maybe it has some sort of version check in the executable. Nevertheless, I haven't seen the actual problem yet so I'll try it out myself when I can. Also, I'm not a fan of using virtual machines for graphical tests and have no experience using VMware.

Well, I must use VMware, becouse DWM in Longhorns doesn't work on my 'real machine' ;) Probably with patched DWM Aero will run (with patched kernel). I'll try it tomorrow.

VMware since 7.0 has great 3D support with working DWM in Longhorn/Vista betas, but you must use specific old driver (11.6.0.13). The newest XPDM driver from VMware Tools since 8.0 doesn't support DWM. I can send working driver to you if you want.

This driver is integrated in Sigma OS 3.0, Sigma support Aero out of the box :) Will this driver works with other Longhorn builds ?

Thanks for this. For ex. in VirtualBox LH 3718 DCE works whith default XP driver. I'll integrate this drivers (and VirtualBox too) in my modification of Longhorn 3718.

Longhorn 3683 = XP. You can easy install XP updates and software.

I cant find "\.S.y.s.t.e.m.R.o.o.t.\.S.y.s.t.e.m.3.2.\.s.m.s.s...e.x.e" in both ntoskrnl and ntkrnlpa.
Who cares if Windows XP is unsupported by Microsoft, hackers don't target it because it's old.
If you just browse the internet like a responsible person, and if you install an antivirus, you'll probably not get viruses.
-That was my rant, thank you lol-

It should be there, some hex editors don't search the right way you would think. I can't give an offset because it differs from build to build. Try looking for the hex equivalent of your build number, you'll have many hits, but keep looking at the string side for "\.S.y.s.t.e.m.R.o.o.t.\.S.y.s.t.e.m.3.2.\.s.m.s.s...e.x.e".

It still doesnt work with me. Can you give me a link to all patched files for Longhorn 4074 please?

EDIT: i already found "\.S.y.s.t.e.m.R.o.o.t.\.S.y.s.t.e.m.3.2.\.s.m.s.s...e.x.e".

EDIT2: i cant change version 6.0 to 5.1.

I'm sorry to resurrect this thread from the grave, but I have been following your tutorial and have succeeded in changing the kernel in longhorn, but when it comes to xp 64bit, I could not find the major and minor number in the kernel file, somehow the build number is still there, I'm a bit lost and can someone point out how to change the major and minor number for xp 64bit please?

I was never able to find a way to change later 64 bit builds. I believe older ones like LH 4074 64 bit can be changed this way, but 5048 and newer can not and XP 64 bit is one of those newer builds. I'm sure there is a way to change it its just done in a different location and file.

Sorry to bump this but, I'm having a hard time changing the build number on sigma OS 3.0. I have changed the hex keys listed in your instructions, and they don't work. The Winver still says 6.0 4074

You don't have to patch it as it's already patched http://techvortal.pl/viewtopic.php?f=202&t=2871 (Polish, but well, this project is Polish)
