I remember about 1 year Bill was running around making a big deal about NTFS's sucessor WINFS I know Vista will now use NTFS, and that possibly Blackcomb/ Vienna will use WINFS, but I heard it was in a Longhorn build has anyone heard about it?

WinFS was never NTFS's successor - it was a SQL-type indexing system that would run on top of NTFS, which is a filesystem. Anyway, WinFS was officially dropped recently, and the work done on it handed to the SQL Server team at Microsoft to use in that product. Versions of WinFS were in some Longhorn builds, and I think that a beta of it was also available for Windows XP.

They seem to be saying now that it might not be released on its own:

Quote:
These changes do mean that we are not pursuing a separate delivery of WinFS, including the previously planned Beta 2 release. With most of our effort now working towards productizing mature aspects of the WinFS project into SQL and ADO.NET, we do not need to deliver a separate WinFS offering.

Quote:
Since WinFS is no longer being delivered as a standalone software component, people will wonder what that means with respect to the Windows platform. Just as Vista pushed forward on many aspects of the search and organize themes of the Longhorn WinFS effort, Windows will continue to adopt work as it's ready. We will continue working the innovations, and as things mature they will find their way into the right product experiences – Windows and otherwise. Having so much ready for SQL Server and ADO.NET is a big impact on the platform, and more will come.

Quote:
WinFS was a data storage and management system based on relational databases, developed by Microsoft from 2003 to 2006 for use as an advanced storage subsystem for the Microsoft Windows operating system. It has since been cancelled as a separate product, and some of its technologies will be moved into future versions of ADO.NET and Microsoft SQL Server.

WinFS no longer exists. Some features that were planned for WinFS (mainly metadata-related), however, will be incorporated into the next version of SQL Server.

As far as I know, WinFS started off as a file-system, but when it turned out to be a disaster, they turned it into Windows Future Storage, which is the indexing system that runs on top of NTFS.

WinFS is dead- but some people think otherwise.
Like the original Longhorn, WinFS was great in both idealistic and conceptual terms, but it really didn't have no direction. That's also the same reason why they did a project reset on Longhorn, along with other reasons.
WinFS was abandoned a few months ago. Infact, you can read it here
I think one of the old OSBA servers still has WinFS Beta 1 somewhere...

There are two WinFS archives, one is smaller than the other by about 30mb and I don't know which one is the right one. Can someone find out for me please and PM me to let me know? Cheers.

I upped the one thats 30mb bigger and it contains the net framework (you need that certain version to run FS). Please leave that one on the server.

EDIT: The filename should be WINFS Beta 1 (completed), and it has already been moved to the download account by you about a week ago.

It never really was in the classical definition of a file-system, in reality it was just a service.

By changing names MS draws atention to projects...

WinFS has come up many times in MS history...

Dought it, to be honest. Very hard to tell, they haven't even strated on the Kernal so it will be at least another couple years until the very first alphas appear, which will probably use NTFS.

It will reapear from time to time... Orginally it was supposed to be part of Chicago

Teh whole concept is very simple to explain but very hard to program.

From what I've read, I thought this was first slated for Cairo. Was it really planned for Chicago?

Well thanxs for all he replys on this, seems MS have come up with a good idea and as usual made it as impossible to understand as ever. :)

Well I downloaded LH 3683 and got it working, with WINFS! But when I double clicked on a ME partition a stop error appeared that an error occred in "WINFS.dll." So the early appears to attempt to catalogue FAT32 drives!
