Windows NT 3.1 Build 297
Just the DOS portion is complete, the installation of NT 3.5 Beta Japanese edition shows the message when starting the GUI portion of Setup (English Translation):

Quote:
Setup Message

Setup cannot install on the current processor.

Cannot proceed with install.

Using the patched initial.inf and setup.inf (not below but removes "read-syms ProcessorID" in initial.inf and setup.inf), the setup does not working, showing the initial.inf is corrupted or missing.

Patch located here: http://files.oldos.org/files/updates/winntpatch.rar

Using the patch located above, it will run, but the setup portion is half English and after typing the name and company, it will halt and restart the system.

Can you find the working method to install NT 3.5 Japanese Beta Build 612?

If those files are from the release and not the beta/that build version then they may be causing a problem. You should edit the .INF files yourself (it's easy) instead of dropping in files. All you need to do is find the first instance of "STF_PROCESSOR" and set it equal to "I586" removing the rest of the original line. Once that is done you can boot into NT for the GUI portion of setup.

Anything checked :P
When I installed wNT3.5b612 on my test pc, to get graphical setup to work properly I had to modify %systemroot%\system32\initial.inf & setup.inf:

Quote:
in [ProcessorVar] section change
Code:
STF_PROCESSOR = "" ? $(!LIBHANDLE) GetProcessor

to
Code:
STF_PROCESSOR = $(ProcessorID_I586)

Or just this:

Yep, this also works:
Code:
STF_PROCESSOR = "I586"

:)

Either way, it is so easy to fix the INF files there is no reason to use "patched" versions since you can accidentally drop in one from the wrong build/version.

Don't know what you mean with this.
But you need to do it for the whole NT 3.x line.
But you can't do it before you install, it would save the .cab file (yes .in_ files are actually .cab files themselves) in the wrong format, I know, I tryed it.

The INF file package he linked to in the original post contained INF files for the released builds of NT and not the beta builds. Since he was trying to install the beta, dropping in the 'patched' files that were from an entirely different build will derail things. (INITIAL.INF for example contains a list of file sizes for the files to be installed.)

Instead, he should have just modded the INF files that the beta version included. :)
