my friend just told me that he activated his install of windows xp professional using a product key that he got from a COTAFE computer, the activation was sucessful because he used the TAFE owner/company name as well, my question is will COTAFE know he did it? you would think they would?

COTAFE= college of technical and further education

I am guessing the key is a volume license key. So no, they will not know since activation is done through Microsoft. However they can inquire on how many activations has been done using the key, but that's about all.

The license key's on those kind of computers are not used anyway.

Most of the computers have an VLK XP installed and the keys on there are for OEM use.

They can't find anything about about the activation, just that's its activated maybe the IP but Microsoft doesn't disclose that information.

If he doesn't want to be scared to be caught with that XP, let him buy one from ebay or something or just but Vista in the store.
