Some specs of the Computer you're trying to install it on would be helpful here ;)

hounsell, he is using VMWare. It's best to know what the VMWare version is

Anyway, that build is not bootable, even if it is it BSODs. So you need a Windows 98 bootdisk to create a partition. Once you make the partition, format it, and type D:\I386\winnt.exe to start the setup.

If that does not work you need to use Virtual PC. And no you don't need to change BIOS date or enter serial #

Ah, I could have sworn I read he was installing it on a real PC

If you used a 'Windows 2000' Config to set up VMWare, I suggest trying it set to NT4. Build 1729 is sort of in the middle of the builds really, so compatibility could go either way.

I think 1729 is closer to NT4. I believe builds in the 1900s and above are closer to windows 2000.

Starting in Windows NT 5.0 Beta 2 (build 1906?), the isos are all bootable.

Hate to be picky, but, this is a genuine 1671 CD below.

Hmm, Genuine as in straight from MS or anything similar that it really boots to the setup? To be honest, I haven't seen any pre-beta 2 bootable isos. All the NT 5.0 cd images in the ftp before beta 2 cannot boot, and when they do a BSOD occurs.

Workstation CDs have been bootable since NT4. Server CDs were not bootable to NT5 Beta 2

Again, not trying to be a know all, but the NT4 & 5B1 CDs in my presence
are indeed bootable.
Upgrades aren't bootable,(to the best of my knowledge) maybe that's what you're
thinking of.

Hmm. Well, I know the NT4 Enterprise Server and Backoffice Server CDs I have aren't bootable (I had to make bootable versions myself). I'm not exactly familiar with NT5, so I can't comment on that though.

My NT4 Server (retail) disc is bootable. I recently got my hands on a timebombed NT4 server disc (that takes retail keys) which came with an old TCP/IP book, but I don't know if this is bootable as I haven't tried. It probably is bootable though.
