Microsoft would be shooting themselves in the foot if they were to continue making service packs for XP.

Microsoft has put Windows XP in extended support, this means that microsoft will not make any service packs anymore only hotfixes, updates and security fixes.

To think its the most used OS in the world. I mean thats gonna cost them if lots of people stick to it for years to come like I will.

They will support it until 1014, but you are right i heard from other people that thay are considering to switch to Mac or linux, or wait until windows 7 comes out but skip windows vista (here it's called windows Fiasco sometimes)

They might do as what they did with Windows 2000 - a release bundle (I can't remember the right phrase) which is not a SPack.

So in short, it is most likely a no.

I think eventually, Vista is going to end up like Windows Me. Windows Vista acts like Windows Server 2003, just like how Windows Me acted like Windows 98.

It's called a Security Rollup.

Because Microsoft stop shipping Windows XP, there will not be Service Pack 4. End of story.

support will be to 2014

and yeah i think they want people to switch to 7 also because service packs are free and 7 is a few hundred, and easier for programs to be made compatible if people are just using vista and 7 mostly.

Extended Support is till 2014, but Mainstream one ends up on 14 April 2009, which means that after this day, Microsoft will be releasing only security updates. So, unless Microsoft will have made SP4 before 14 April 2009 (which, I guess is impossible), there won't be any new SP, just like there aren't for Windows 2000, which is in Extended Support too.

Support for Windows XP without a service pack ended on 30 September 2004[61] and support for Windows XP Service Pack 1 and 1a ended on 10 October 2006.[62][63]

Windows XP Service Pack 2 will be retired on 13 July 2010, almost six years after its general availability.[64] As per Microsoft's posted timetable, the company stopped general licensing of Windows XP to OEMs and terminated retail sales of the operating system on 30 June 2008, 17 months after the release of Windows Vista.[65][66] However, an exception was announced on 3 April 2008, for OEMs installing to subnotebooks or UMPCs either until 30 June 2010, or one year after the availability of the next client version of Windows, Windows 7—whichever date comes later.[67][68][69]

On 14 April 2009, Windows XP will begin its "Extended Support" period that will last for 5 years until 8 April 2014.

Is that a good thing or bad thing?

I use WS2k3 on all of my computers (even clients).

I love love love it. (H)

Cause SP3 usually makes your computer run faster (it does for mine :D) Plus when you format you dont download 80+ updates on first logon

Oh, and there's the whole Security issue. Some security features won't be backported to SP2, like the Black-hole router detection.

I doubt there will be a SP4 for XP - Im guessing with Vista and Windows 7 and talk of Windows 8 MS have enough on their plate to start thinking about making yet another Service pack for an OS as old as XP is getting now
