The other day, I was checking out the Microsoft Lifecycle page, when I found that under "Next Update and Estimated Date of Availability", Windows Server 2003 was listed as "No further updates planned."

Does this mean that there won't be a Service Pack 3 for Windows Server 2003 (and possibly XP x64?)

Update date: June 10th, 2008

Releasing another service pack for Win2k3 would just encourage people to continue using it, and Microsoft is going to great length's to promote Server 08, they seem to have learned from the advertising (or lack of) mistakes they made with Vista.
Personally, I don't see why Microsoft should waste the time and effort it woult take to continue updating Win2k3.

Than Server 2008?
Personally, I'd use Server 2003 in more scenarios than Server 2008, because Server 2003 has a true advantage over XP, whereas Server 2008 does not have a true advantage over Vista.

R2 is not a replacement for non-R2 2003, it's just a kind of feature pack - exactly the same updates and service packs apply to 2003 and 2003 R2 eg Server 2003 SP2 is for both. Interesting though that they say no more service packs for 2003 though, I assumed there would be one more as it has quite a lot of support left. Server administrators are slow to upgrade too so 2008 will probably take a while to become widespread - even 2000 Server is still quite widely used.
