Windows Cairo, the lost OS!

Post by HeinanXP »

So, Windows Cairo supposed to be some upgrade to Win95 before Win98 was released, and even before MS started to develop Win98!

Many of the features that supposed to be in Cairo, moved to Win98 SE.
But, there are some that gone with the years.

Some of them:
1) Some advanced file system called 9XFS, which supposed to be like NTFS for NT, but 9XFS for Win9X.
2) Advanced GUI, that make you remember the Windows XP GUI.
3) Advanced Windows Firewall.

Of course, when you see this list, you understand that this System, couldnt run on computers of 1996!

This information is important. As I understood from some MS emloyees, there are some plans to take some features from Cairo and put them in Windows 7!

Hehe Cairo was Microsoft's vapourware attempt to combat Apple's Copland, to steer developers and IT people away from Apple's idea (of course, it was a little more than just that). The Cairo ideas have been integrated into each Windows release since, much like Copland ideas have kept trickling into the Mac OS even up to 10.4.

Cairo was more a den of ideas, but there was compiled code for it. No full OS or anything, mainly demo code of features.

Of Course man, Windows Firewall is the most important thing in Windows XP!!!

9XFS is actually the basis to WinFS!

Umm...9XFS, eh? Isn't that supposed to be FAT32? Because FAT32 support was brought to Windows with Windows 95 OSR2. Not with 98.
