That would just give an error as compatibility modes are disabled on system files.
Try switching the windows 3.0 ega driver with windows 1.01’s. it will be fun.

You can always alter the registry to point to the 2000 Explorer, in a directory outside of C:\WINDOWS, with it set to compatibility mode.

Nope. After changing the path it still was vista’s browser. I even deleted vista’s explorer and now an application not found error comes up every time I open an explorer window.

This is a very nice little experiment. Never thought of it. If I may ask how come the windows logo never shows on the start button? Isn't it integrated into explorer directly?

I’m not sure why.
It may have to do with the explorer bitmaps as the Windows XP start button logo is in the explorer.exe and maybe it's pulling the wrong icon

Nope. That’s not possible. Explorer always pulls the button bitmap from itself.
