Post subject:  Can I customize left side banner Start Menu Server 2003?

hello, i would like to customize the left side banner of Start Menu of Server 2003,
wanted to change it into a "Windows .net Server 2003" style
don't wanna mess with the time bomb or the product activation mechanism of the actual beta or evaluation builds

would the "Taskbar Classic Start Menu" software do this job for me?
does it work under Server 2003 environment?

thanks!

Use resource hacker and replace the bitmap.
Both of the answers to the questions are yes.

I'll give you a tutorial.
Before you do this, download a Windows .NET server build and extract the bitmap resources from it. I like to do this by extracting EXPLORER.EX_ from the i386 directory on the CD, then extracting EXPLORER.EXE from it.
First, download and install Resource Hacker. I expect you've done this already but the link is here
http://angusj.com/resourcehacker/#download
Once Resource Hacker is installed, open the program, then open explorer.exe (File -> Open -> browse to c:\windows and double click explorer.exe)
Once explorer.exe is opened, open the bitmap folder and find the bitmap for the banner for your version of Windows Server 2003 (for me it's resource 167 but yours might be different)
Once you have selected the correct resource, press CTRL+R to open the replace resource dialog box, click on 'Open file with new bitmap...' and browse for the .png from the Windows .NET server build you downloaded earlier.
Once you have verified that the resource was indeed replaced, you can either: kill explorer, then click save, then restart explorer, or you can click save as, save explorer.exe in a different location, e.g. your desktop, then replace it manually.
Once explorer has been restarted, click on the start menu to see results.

For replacing the banner on the login screen on Windows 2000, download a beta 3 build and extract MSGINA.DLL from it. Find MSGINA.DL_ from the i386 directory, extract that file with something like 7-Zip, then extract MSGINA.DLL using 7-Zip to extract the resources from it.
Download resource hacker and install it on Windows 2000. If you get an error install version 3.6 from here:
https://web.archive.org/web/20140425222457/http://www.angusj.com/resourcehacker/reshack_setup.exe
Once resource hacker is installed, open MSGINA.DLL. This file is located in C:\WINNT\system32\. Open the bitmap folder and you should see resources 101 and 107. These are the login banners for Windows 2000 Professional using high colour modes.
Go ahead and press CTRL+R (or Action -> Replace Bitmap) to invoke the replace resource dialog box again, go ahead and follow the same procedures you used to replace the start banner for this. Make sure you replace the correct resources as there's two bitmaps for the login screen.
Afterwards, save the file onto your desktop (or another location) and manually replace the file. I recommend Replacer: http://www3.telus.net/_/replacer/ restart to see changes.

If you have any issues following this tutorial PM me and I'll make a video tutorial.

using the same method, and having replaced the file
it reported error before logon, the only thing i can do
is to press the reboot button on the dialog box

Then you probably broke something else that is not msgina.dll
