Information and a full list of the 186 files removed is here: http://www.microsoft.com/About/Legal/eudecision/faq.mspx

But in general, "there is no huge difference between Windows XP Professional and the Reduced Media Edition"

They have just removed the Windows Media player and so on (like the N edition, or is the same one).

I thought there was a bit of a difference between RME and N, because with N you can install the Media Player 9.

I have the .iso here but not tested it yet.

In the link provided by defect17 you can find this sentence:

These new versions of Windows XP will be named Windows XP Home Edition N and Windows XP Professional N, where "N" stands for "not with Windows Media Player."

so i think that Win XP MRE == Win XP N

And also, you can install Win Media Player on XP MRE and
get back the missing functionalities
(i don't have the link, but i found an article on Flexbeta)

Indeed, my understanding was that Microsoft was intending to use the name Reduced Media Edition, but the EU Commission nixed that, with the logic that consumers would feel they were getting less for the same price, and sent Microsoft away to come up with another name. They returned with possibly the most unoffensive, yet also uninformative name ever.
AFAIK and by this version of events, the name was all that was changed.

I have copies of both XP Pro RME and XP Pro N, and they are different concerning the files, while having essentially the same functionality. You're right saying RME was supposed to be the name for the media-less editions of XP but was declined and then N was chosen, but the media of RME and N is not identical. Looking at them, I'd conclude that RME was sort of a pre-release of N as the former copy still has some media files left that are gone in N.
