Here's a thread listing the origins of many of the wallpapers and sample pictures in Windows 2000 and XP. This list might be of interest if you're curious about the photographer, location and origins of these (mostly) nice wallpapers, or if you actually want to buy them and leak the full resolution originals. Most if not all of them seem to come from stock photography sites such as Corbis and Getty Images (although Corbis was bought over by Getty Images). I'm planning on doing a thread like this for Vista and 7 too, although for 8 onwards it'll probably be harder to track down the origins.

Windows 2000:
Boiling Point: None (made by MS themselves?)
Chateau: None
Fall Memories: None (made by MS themselves?)
Fly Away: None (made by MS themselves?)
Gold Petals: https://www.gettyimages.co.uk/license/527995256
Ocean Wave: None
Paradise: None
Purple Sponge: None (made by MS themselves?)
Solar Eclipse: https://www.gettyimages.co.uk/license/519056618
Water Color: None (made by MS themselves?)

All of the ME-exclusive wallpapers were taken by MS employee Matthew A. Felton (best known for the NT 5.0 startup)

Windows XP:
Wallpapers:
Ascent: http://www.gettyimages.com/detail/photo/mountain-with-the-moon-royalty-free-image/88214044 (dead)
Autumn: https://www.gettyimages.co.uk/detail/photo/autumn-leaves-royalty-free-image/79867044 (dead)
Azul: https://www.gettyimages.co.uk/license/532513338
Bliss: None (MS bought it, so it was most likely taken down afterwards)
Crystal: None
Follow me: None
Friend: https://www.gettyimages.co.uk/license/528843772
Home: None
Moon flower: None
Peace: None
Power: None
Purple flower: http://www.corbisimages.com/stock-photo/rights-managed/FE001040/pink-cyclamen (dead)
Radiance: https://www.gettyimages.co.uk/license/519064308 (although in XP it's flipped and rotated)
Red moon desert: https://www.gettyimages.co.uk/license/518999198
Ripple: None
Stonehenge: https://www.gettyimages.co.uk/license/521830986
Tulips: https://www.gettyimages.co.uk/license/532519782
Vortec space: https://www.gettyimages.co.uk/license/582650014
Wind: https://www.gettyimages.co.uk/license/520916902
Windows XP: None (obviously)
Sample Pictures:
Blue hills: None
Sunset: https://www.gettyimages.co.uk/license/588181058
Water lilies: https://www.gettyimages.co.uk/detail/photo/water-lilies-in-bloom-royalty-free-image/90271642 (dead)
Winter: https://www.gettyimages.co.uk/detail/photo/snow-and-frost-on-trees-in-forest-royalty-free-image/88215995 (dead)
MCE-exclusive Sample Pictures:
At the Arch: None
Big Wave: None
Fish: None
Freestyle: https://www.gettyimages.co.uk/license/523065136
Overlooking Rio: https://www.gettyimages.co.uk/license/654492168

Many of them seem to have vanished from Getty Images. I'm guessing these were on Corbis but for some reason never made it to Getty Images, either due to legal issues, another company purchasing full rights to one of them or something went wrong when transferring them. Noooooo clue. However, if anyone has other sources for the pictures, post the links.

Two lefts and a diagonal sidestep from where you are.

Windows 7 M3 (6801)
I have the original 46MB TIFF that the XP Bliss wallpaper was based on, so it must have still been up at a stock image site somewhere before MS bought it.

Yeah, it would've been on Corbis. I'm glad someone leaked the full size version before it vanished for good.

On another note, I also found a 1920x1200 version of Azul, although it's less saturated compared to both the one in XP and the one on Getty Images.

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but isn't this the Windows 2000 "Paradise" wallpaper? https://www.gettyimages.co.uk/detail/ph ... e/NA008100

Unlike Windows 2000 and Windows XP in which each wallpaper has a name, Vista groups its wallpapers into categories. The wallpapers are listed below by category, and any wallpaper names are taken from either the stock photo source or the wallpaper metadata.

Black and White

I assume Microsoft created these images, but I cannot verify. These images are too general for Tineye to create a fingerprint.

Wow, good work! You managed to find some origins I hadn't found (I also had a list of wallpaper origins for Vista, although a few were missing).

This is titled "Xray Of Salal Leaves" and can be found at https://www.gettyimages.co.uk/license/200171069-001. However, in Vista it was rotated.

Yeah, they were created by Microsoft. img27.jpg is credited to Robert Stein in the Beta builds (where it's actually img26.jpg), and presumably he did the rest given they're similar to the beta Auras along with his Longhorn aurora stuff.

This is titled "Leaf 02" and was taken by Mike Swanson. It can be found at http://www.mikeswanson.com/wallpaper/im ... f%2002.jpg.

I don't think this is the origin, given how blurry it is. This was one of the ones Microsoft commissioned from some photographer.

Also you forgot to mention img24.jpg which was one of the Vistas. Pretty sure Jenny Lam created it according to some article I saw.

I guess Mark Karrass just decided to move it to that French site for some reason, lol.
