Cheap Alpha Server to run Windows 2000 RC?

Post by whistler2250 »

I've looked on ebay for these cool machines but they are outrageously expensive, and I want one of these to run the Windows 2000 AXP RC2 2128, since emulators are not really the best for this kind of thing. Any suggestions?

Do not buy such things on eBay. For some reason, they are massively overpriced.

The best thing would probably be to check out some universitys. Sometimes you can pick up stuff like this for free.

There are many universities where I live, so I may check that out, but I doubt that there are any Alpha Servers there.

Do you have any local classifieds sites (like Craigslist or Kijiji) in your area? if so it may be worth checking those to see if anyone's getting selling one there. the trick with eBay and local classified sites is to be patient and check daily if possible, I've gotten a few computers that way so it's worth a shot.

I think eBay has a feature that allows you to subscribe to specific search terms so it reminds you when another item on the search list goes on sale, that can remind you when a cheaper listing is available so you have a better chance at getting an Alpha system.

It is a ton of money for a piece of obsolete hardware that is not super rare.

I couldn't find anything cheaper on ebay myself, so do you know of anywhere to get it cheaper?

From the looks of the back I don't see how you could connect your monitor.

There's really no way instead of waiting and looking again on eBay or classifieds-pages.

I do own an AlphaServer DS20 and to be honest, it was fun playing around with it, but quite a number of builds would not run (see some older post of me in this forum). Besides, you won't be able to really use the internet due to lack of a suitable browser. So if I were you, I also wouldn't put too much money in it.

Bought an AlphaStation rather recently as well, but there was no hard-disk included. Putting in another SCSI-disk didn't help - mainboard made some beeps and the Windows install routine couldn't access the hard disk despite being displayed in the system configuration. So whenever you buy something, better make sure a hard disk-drive is already included.

If you can get to Ohio for local pickup or coordinate with someone there, there is someone giving away some alphaserver gear on the CCTalk mailing list: http://www.classiccmp.org/pipermail/cct ... 37912.html

Windows 2000 RC2 on an Alpha Server DS20e

Post by red-ray »

Hi Guys, Does anyone have Windows 2000 RC2 running on an Alpha Server DS20e or know if it should run please?

I have it running on my DS20, but fancy a system with faster CPUs. I guess it mainly comes down to if the firmware was released.
