[Found] "Neptune Project"

Post by Namronia »

Hi, i found a nice Neptune Project:
I think i'm going to officially quit with neptune... why? because it cannot be modernized... or very well. I was able to integrate sp4 to some level before pausing work on that and working on porting neptune into whistler to have skinning etc. The advantages would have been great, it was a little secret project of mine i had going on. Anyways there isn't any real demand for neptune, nor any real reason... so i'm not going to bother.

Advantages of neptune were things such as activity centers etc. which windows 2000 never had. They can be easily enough made for windows 2000, xp, whatever anyways... instead of trying to fix a busted arse Beta.

Sorry guys, i might move onto something else, but it really is wasted efforts it seems.

I hope theyre finishing it sounds very nice, if they could really integrate sp4 and skinning

But wouldn't integrating SP4 just de-neptunise it?

I mean, the kernel etc... would be replaced by W2K's??

Yep, ntoskrnl & a bunch of other neptune files would be replaced, killing
the OS...

you could rehack the new system files with the old graphics, i just think it would have been nice to the activity centers up and running.

I dont think they will get it with sp4, but skinning would be wonderful

Mortagen is making that project by himself, I don't know if he is up to it alone.
May our software be open-source, and our women closed-source.

Iv'e probably spent a year or so on & off attempting to build a complete
working iso of Neptune, started when OSBA was still up...
Made a complete functioning bootdisk set, complete functioning Discover
folder, made all references during the Dos portion of the setup reflect
Neptune, not Windows 2000, made all references within the OS reflect
Neptune, in System properties via my comp plus msinfo32, dxdiag etc, etc,
even has the support folder with the usual tools that are in 2000, but
work & reflect Neptune...
Then upped the screens to the screenshots section here under "Neptune 5111 Modified "

The only thing I have yet to finish when I find some quiet time, {usually in
the beginning of the year} is the activity center...
Just need to get fired up again...

@UltimateGTR, bill gates stoped the neptune project because he didnt want a "home" version of windows 2000.

They started to develope neptune because they wanted to have a 2000 Home and then they canceled it because they didn't wanted to have it...... Image

Well, technically, Neptune was just an idea that had been cancelled after some time, and these two (suppose there are really two builds of it) alpha builds were never supposed to leak.

Yeah I probably will, though I just know it'll be ripped apart
& further used as the basis for someone elses project...

& no I didn't use someone elses hack for this project of mine, I still have
an unbootable / original timebombed release from the OSBA 2003 days
downloaded either off Kmenzels server, or MF_2's server, back in the days
when zero posters were pruned once a month...
dirtwarrior wrote:KO did you get the driver problem solved?
Well, no not 100%, though I did find that if I used a certain build of windows
installer on this when 1st installed, it would allow me to install directX all
the way to build 9, then & only then could I update the video drivers &
successfully have it reboot without crashing, but - that wasn't a 100%
working fix for all brands of cards I'd tried it on...
I haven't plyed with this for probably a year now though...
From memory though, it became less stable with directX 9, & I found
directX 8 gave it a better outcome & was by far a more stable option...

TBH though, i've probably spent more time dissecting the setupapi.dll &
finding the workaround for disabling the file protection via the security
catalogue check on installation, than I have on any other part of this project...
I had to in order for it to continue the installation with the amount & type
of files I modified in order to both reflect Neptune not 2000, plus accept
other files from 2000, for reasons i'll elaborate on at a later date...

Mortagen posted a screenshot today, Neptune working on a real PC (not VM) with working video drivers and stuff...

Neptune was being developed to get the best out of the 9x kernel and the NT kernel and put it together in one version, and it failed.

And indeed windows me was developed instead of neptune.

I may be a little late posting, but this sounds like an interesting idea to me. However, like others have said, I don't think SP4 is such a good idea, but skinning is great!
