OEM activation on XP with OEMBIOS files

Post by pr0gram the pr0grammer »

I'm reformatting a HP box running XP Home ... so I took my XP Home OEM CD and replaced the OEMBIOS files with the OEMBIOS files in the i386 folder in the recovery partition. The result should be that it will not require activation, as it will see the HP bios. Am I right?

Also, while googling around for OEMBIOS stuff, I found this post ... which seems to imply if I took a different version of XP (like Pro), and replaced the OEMBIOS files with these OEM ones, that it wouldn't require activation, as it would again see the HP bios there. Would this work? Could I use this to format with a copy of XP Media Center instead, and not require activation?

afaik OEM PC's from the big brands dont need activation when reinstalling XP from a recovery CD/image - my acer aspire e500 doesn't - and thats wiht the factory default ghost image..

I got XP Home installed without activation on the HP: swapping the OEMBIOS files worked fine. Though now I really should try with media center ... it could work, i dunno.
