PostPost subject: Windows Neptune over XP?        Posted: Sun Nov 25, 2007 1:50 pm
I have a Packard Bell EasyNote laptop. I had an original Windows XP DVD but it got broken and I had to use an original XP from HP NX6110 laptop. However, it wants me to activate it. Will it be good if I upgrade XP to Neptune? I mean... I tried to install 98, 98SE and Me and they don't load (my heard drive is too large for them maybe - 80GB). I don't have Windows 2000 on a CD, but I think that Neptune has some inprovements.

I want to ask the following:
1. Can I use Skype, ICQ etc. on a Windows Neptune system?
2. Can I install Windows 2000 updates and service packs on Windows Neptune?
3. Does Neptune support 80 GB and more Hard drives?
4. Does Neptune has desktop themes?
5. Is it reliable (for a beta release)?
6. Can I use the Internet with Neptune (Outlook Express, Mozilla, IE, ICQ, Skype etc.?)

Thanks in advance.

Impossible, it'll break Neptune.

3. Does Neptune support 80 GB and more Hard drives?

If Windows 2000 supports it, Neptune will support it.

Neptune doesn't support themes.

I have never made Neptune crash.

Yes.

Yes.

Well, I'm asking this because I want to be sure. I think ICQ 5 and Skype support Windows 2000, and if Windows Neptune is almost the same than I suppose Skype and ICQ would run on it.

Neptune wouldn't really be a good choice. It has tons of security holes anyway. You can't even install hotfixes.

I am sorry for the off topic but what would you suggest since my Windows XP DVD broke? I can't make my mind between Neptune and some of the few Whistler builds. And I don't want another XP, because I should activate it and so on... Windows 9X and Me cannot run... And in order to install Windows 2000 I should do a clean install. I'm desperate. :?
Edit: I like the feel of both Whistler (liked the Watercolor theme) and Netune (the Web-like interface for some apps).

You should use Whistler Build 2257. It has no activation and StartPage.

Thanls for the suggestion! However I want to ask for another thing - Will Whistler Build 2257 be recognised as a newer verion of Windows than XP, which is buld 2600? I mean 2600>2257 (but 5111>both 2257 and 2600) and that might be a problem since I don't have the time to do a clean install.

Thanks for the answers anyway!

Why not just get XP VLK? Using any beta as an everyday OS is a very bad idea.

I like Neptune and Whistler because they are better looking than 98 for example and faster than XP (I've used Neptune once). Well, are there any chances that I get a Neptune or Whistler theme for XP?

The Classic theme built into XP is similar to the look of Windows 2000/Neptune, and you can get "Watercolour" (Whistler) themes for XP if you patch your XP to accept non-MS themes.

I've patched Windows XP and I am now using the Watercolor theme! It's faster than Luna in my experience. Thanks guys!

1. right

2. right

3. it does, its ntfs so it does support harddisks up to 1TB.

4. wrong. there's a file called "themes.exe" in system32, it doesnt support themes like XP or vista, but like 98 with installed PLUS Pack

5. it is

6. right

2. No, installing a Win2k SP will probably kill your system.
3. This has nothing to do with NTFS. FAT32 supports partitions up to 2TB and NTFS supports partitions that are much larger (16EB?). Neptune does not support 48-bit LBA, so it'll not be able to recognize more than 128GB of hard disk space.

I once tried to do this, and the next time I booted, the system couldn't boot at all.
