I was wondering if anyone has a version of windows that could have been a sucess, but MS never released, Mine is Windows XP FLP it would have sold as a Windows XP "Basic" as not many people me included would want all the extra la de da eye candy on windows XP pro.

Edit made title make more sense

Yep, FLP for me as well. I think it wouldn't have been too bad if MS had released it generally. Okay, it's available for you "if you know where to look" and the fact it doesn't contain any activation makes it even easier.

Other than that, we need to ask which versions are there that cannot be bought, I can think of:
    Windows XP Professional "Corporate"
    Windows Datacenter
    Windows Vista Enterprise

And TBH, none of these (maybe except "XP-Corp") are of interest to the general customer, I'd say. And if "XP-Corp" was available, they could scrap WPA altogether.

Good Point, all this Windows Genuine Advantage Stuff has put people off downloading updates such as IE7 and I know people whos OEM versions that came preinstalled are being hounded by WGA star logo, whenever MS attemps to introduce some new flashy anti poracy measure genuime users somtimes get ettfected.

What if they melded together a few existing OSes? How about a corporate version of XP Professional, plus the Media Centre and Tablet PC components. Plus the image-based setup of WinFLP. :D

Won't Microsoft please think of the geeks?!

I rather wished Neptune had gone further than it did....

You do know that Tablet came in a VLK version yeah.?
I'll up some screens of it I have here somewhere...

Maybe when finding the time I should see if the MCE add-on pack
actually installs on Tablet..!
Dunno why I didn't think of that before...

You can use MCE media to install Tablet, if you've got the right key. I figured that the only reason why the tablet components were on the MCE media was because tablet and MCE are one in the same, in terms of media...

Yeah I knew that, the key determines whether it's either MCE or Tablet..
What I was getting at was installing Tablet, then adding the MCE05
add-on pack to it { or attempting to } just for the sake of knowing if it's
possible, to make tablet run the MCE apps, the add-on pack says it
works on any version of Pro, there were even reports on OSBA of
members making it work on Home. {supposedly}...

They probably would have done that if it wasn't for Vista

I would have liked it if they had kept going with the longhorn builds before they changed over

There's apparently the possibility to get both the Tablet and MCE components running on XP and Server 2003...

edit: Fixed a typo.

Someone should make a custom Windows version that is:

-XP Pro VLK (no key built in though, as you want to use one that passes WGA)
-Media Centre and Tablet PC built in (installed for you when Windows is installed)
-Vista theme and Vista icons (ie every icon Vista-ised, unlike even in Vista itself where there's still loads of old icons!), and Windows Vista eXPerience Ultimate Edition branding
-.Net 3, WMP11, IE7, Defender etc all built in
-Installer as much like the Vista one as possible, Wim based setup.
-No other programs or settings other than the above, as I like to choose that kind of thing myself - the above are all standard things that everyone would install the same, so they're OK

I.e. it would be Vista Ultimate but without all the Vista bloat/WGA :D

That's a a bit to ask for :) I'd also like this thing to be based on Server 20003 instead of XP and to have all the security updates in it

It surely wouldn't be that much work for someone who knows how to repack XP into the Wim format and integrate the extra stuff into the image would it?

There is such a thing – XP Pro, based on the Server 2003 SP2 kernel, installation is done using the WIM method. :)

In my opinion they should've continued their releases of the Windows NT line for various RISC processors, maybe brought the PPC port to OFW hardware without an NT Veneer, maybe released the 2195 of Windows 2000 for Alpha... That sort of stuff. :)

(Well, in reality, I realize how that would be a horrible decision market wise. Doesn't stop me from dreaming though :) )

My point is to have them leaked by others.

The (Whistler) 2309 build you mentioned is said to be fake.

In a way, you already do have XP Pro with Media Centre and Tablet PC Support, most commonly known as Longhorn 3718.

Other then that, the only one I wish they would release is the Beta form of Neptune (Regardless of reports, it did pass into Beta form internally)

You just said you don't want anything released.

Oh, I would have liked a public release for Windows FLP.
