In Screenshots Gallery -> Boot Screens there is this bootscreen:

Is it real from existing build or fake?

Looks just like the 98 bootscreen? (Never used 95, so that might also be similar to 95's.)

It's probably fake.

Looks more like Windows 95, because Windows 98 flag is more diagonal.

Looks quiet as Windows Codename: Nashville. Also named as Windows 96.

Nashville was also named Windows 96 but was never released. Its technologies built up in development were reused in later products such as Windows 98 and Internet Explorer 4.

If is it fake, then it's definetely based on Win95 bootscreen.

Well, Nashville build 999 still use a Windows 95 bootscreen (and Windows 95 string is used everywhere in OS)... but maybe was Win96 bootscreen leaked later ... who knows

Microsoft never released anything that was referred to as Windows 96 to my knowledge.

Actually, there is a reference in one of the files (forget which), which points to Windows 96.

It's fake, I made it 3 years ago when I'd modified the Nashville 999 build to
install as a full, not upgrade, & made it bootable, I may have removed the
timebomb too, can't quite remember...
I made it by turning the number nine upside down, & placing it over the 5,
then blended it in a little...

The uninstal.exe on the bootdisk says it's for Windows 96...
Wether it's a typo or intentional has been debated quite a bit...

But anyway, i like it and i have used it as the ''nashville'' logo (because everyone knows it as ''nashville'' as 96).

Thx for respond. Nice work anyway  only "animated bar" is missing (but it was destroyed by editing in common editor... if i remember rightly)

Say what, the animated bar wasn't destroyed because I used a "common Editor"
as you put it, it was removed, period...
If I'd have used a "common editor" to modify it, the animated bar would
still be on the bottom of the screen, & would look rather poxy when used
as a desktop wallpaper, though no longer animated...
I initially made the screen to be a desktop wallpaper in place of the
clouds bitmap, to be used in the vpc screenshots of it,
then resized it to use as the boot screen later...

If I'd originally wanted it to be a boot screen, I'd have used the appropriate editor to
preserve the animated bar, for use as a boot screen, if that was my intention,
as I did when I made the Chicago 81 boot screen long ago...

No need to be sorry, just remember not to always assume...

& to show I wasn't BSing, I just knocked this up as a Win96 boot screen
with the animated bar on the bottom, took all of 3 minutes...

I've also included a neat app that runs in a dos box, I used to use
for testing any animated boot screens made in the past...
It's great, saved me having to reboot 1000's of times over...
Just remember to read the instructions before using it...

The download of the Win96 Logo.sys + app...

So if it's fake, shouldn't it be removed from the Screenshots page?

Not really, Fake or not it's still interesting to have there for the sake of documenting it.
Take for example Windows 99 (Fake by Air101) is still quite interesting by the fact it has modifcations made to Windows 98 to make it different like the virtual desktops.
And really it's no different to any other custom OS there like the 90MB Windows 2000.

Its fake, KenOath said it self, he just erased the 5 and turned the 9 upside down.
And contact list is for the first time in the start menu on Longhorn 4051.

Just a quick correction on that point...
All of Windows 95 file/build strings were 4.00.xx x x
Nashville's string is 4.10.xxx
Which to me indicates an early Win98 beta, built up of Win95 code, hence the Win95
bitmaps in most places...
I'd even go as far as to think that OSR2.5 was the result of this project,
seeing that Windows 98 was so far behind schedule...

donaldmylife wrote:

Not quite, at the time of OSR 2.1's release, the codename that was
often associated with that was Detroit...
I just found some pics I'd saved when unblestone posted of this
fact on the WH forum,in response to anothers questions,
I just never got around to posting them...

Here's the USB supplement that came with OSR2.1

Image

Here's the contents of that file

& here's a few posts I'd found in various places over time

& on another note, I could've sworn I remembered reading here, of someone
asking for the download of the bootable full Nashville, buggered if I can find the
post though...
Here's the download of it again, With the animated bootscreen
added to both the bootdisk, & extras folder, I found it again last night on a backup, & ripped
& re-packed it again...
