A photo booth I went to with a date last week had 98se.
A pastime some of the local children is to unplug it and plug it back in so they can gawk at its unfamiliarity while it boots up.

I am aware of a Windows 98 system in an accounting firm which holds up a r-e-a-l-l-y antiquated bit of invoice template software. I am aware of a Windows 95 system connected to a microscope in a lab that has long since been air-gapped. The software has been tested but just will not work with anything newer (in the secure sense) and as the equipment is £150k to replace. The organisation involved gave it a reluctant pass as long as it was air gapped.

I am posting the following message from RetroZilla 2.2 running under Windows 95 OSR 2.5 on a PIII-500 with 128MB of PC100 SDRAM. This site renders perfectly. :)

I grew up in an NT world so the closest I came to a business 9x sighting was the "designed for Windows 98" sticker on a Gateway machine in a local Costco in 2011 (couldn't see the screen). Everyone else I knew dumped 98 between 2004 and 2007.

My Pentium MMX 200MHz runs 98SE, but I will probably retire it as it seems it starts to have major issues, among which I can't use an AGP card at all (board won't post).

I do have a Pentium 3 650MHz (Slot 1) w/ 256MB of RAM that might take its place, as soon as I can find a case to stick it into. Still have my Voodoo 3 3000 16MB, a NEC-based USB 2.0 card and a Yamaha YMF-719 OPL3 based soundcard, which I might move to the P3 if I can't get the MMX 200 running again. Maybe will even run one of the early Millenium builds (23xx range) since they're still 98SE (sorta) to an extent.

Comment down below when you have seen Windows 9x used today!
Of course this can include :beta: , but it's more directed to RTM or post-RTM releases.

I would say quite a lot of stores use Windows 9x or something from that time period today, since in commercial cases there's no need to upgrade existing hardware if it already works for them. A month ago I ran into a cash register in Dollar General that I swear was running OS/2. :P

I have an EPSON ActionNote 910c running Win95, as well as a Packard Bell Multimedia L198 running WinME.

I've never had any problems with ME except for the time explorer.exe performed an illegal operation and needed to be arrested closed.

In the electronic measurements laboratory at my university we still have some oscilloscopes and spectrum analyzers that runs on top of Win98 or Win2000.

Also still nowadays there isn't yet a reliable and complete virtualization solution for running old Win98 3D-based games that don't have a patch for running on modern OSes.

I have three Windows 9x machines that I use for retro gaming:

a 486 DX 66 running Win 95 - well, OK, it usually runs in DOS mode as Win95 is pretty slow on it. So this one probably doesn't count.
a Pentium 233MMX running Win 95, with a Voodoo 2 - this is my favorite DOS/9x gaming machine. I also use this machine to write music in Cakewalk Pro Audio.
a PIII 1Ghz running Win 98SE with a Voodoo 3 for the more 3d-intensive games like Unreal Tournament, Diablo 2 in Voodoo mode, etc.

All three machines benefit from ISA sound cards, either Sound Blaster Pro 2 or AWE32 CT2760s.

In my opinion, just can't get the same experience with virtual machines or newer OSes with emulators. So I'll try to keep these Win9x machines running as long as I can. I'll admit I'm the only person I know apart from through the Internet that still has Win9x actually running.

Agreed, I know of no-one else who uses anything below 7, let alone 9x.

I’m in a similar situation to you: a 486 DX2 (running 3.1 as intended), a Pentium 3 running 98 and a K6-2 running 98 SE. All have original parts (although a few had to be replaced recently). The K6-2 system has a Voodoo 3 and it still amazes me that HL actually looks different and better (imho) in 3DFX mode, although nostalgia probably helps. That is the reason I keep mine going.

As an example of the "industrial" application, at my work we have an electronic simulator that was built for a square baler (hay bales). It has an ISA IO card which plugs into a ~18"x6" board full of relays for driving outputs and protection circuits for inputs. A DOS application is run under 95 which can be configured for a variety of different machine configurations that determine frequencies, lag times etc. This is then connected to a controller and is used for testing. The application supports a few nice automatic test sequences and you can type in commands to change things in real time. It was a simple "hardware in the loop" simulator built around the year 2000. It runs on a Gateway PC, Pentium 120MHz. The company really loved their Gateways because a whole bunch of old documents that I find have the author as something like "Microsoft Works Gateway".

Obviously it's not worth redesigning this thing on some very expensive Labview based platform. One of our technicians just finished putting it into a nice custom built cart with casters. IT imaged the IDE hard drive, backed it up onto another IDE hard drive and then put in a SSD with a SATA->IDE adapter. All that cost 1/100th of replacement.
