Hi,
In my VMWare VM (12.0 compatibility), the Windows ME boot logo disappears too quickly and leaves just a DOS prompt with a _ in the upper left corner.
I tried deleting autoexec.bat and config.sys because I read it might help but nothing (also, config.sys reappears at every reboot)
What can I do?

From my experiences I can tell you that I've never been able to get the Windows 95, 98 or ME boot screen to show smoothly and without interruptions, but It could be that these interruptions are related to devices, maybe try using the older VMware 6.0 compatibility, I've used that version for a long time, and I didn't remember Windows ME to switch instantly to MS-DOS boot... Also, config.sys and autoexec.bat didn't change anything maybe because these files are basically not necessary for Windows, they're crucial only for MS-DOS. Or you could try to play with msconfig and disable some unnecessary items, maybe it could be some of them that cause problem to the boot screen.

Yeah, I get the same, but weirdly only for ME, not 98 or 95. Maybe the ME logo disappears early because it loads fast.

Me is really bad, as said many times since the release.
95, Memphis & 98 boot on VMware 12, without BSODing. (Except when I once installed vmware tools, it BSODed me.)

I've personally never dealt with installing Windows Me on VMware, but as Valerio suggested, you can definitely install it using an older hardware compatibility setting; in that case, use 6.0 or 6.5-7.x.

The best compatibility setting to install Windows ME on VMware is 6.5-7.x. Perhaps, earlier ones'd be better.

Just changed compatibility, still disappearing.
But I noticed something: when you improperly shut down your PC, it asks for safe mode and stuff, right?
It disappears right after I choose to boot normally.

If all else fails, try PCem 10.1. http://citadel.rol.im/pcem101_experimental.7z

But be advised, PCem is an emulator, not a virtualizer, so it will heavily depend on your machine's specs.

In my experience with 9x and ME on real machines, it can happen on both as said above but is more frequent on ME. It honestly seems to depend on the system how long it shows up assuming normal boot conditions so its probably disappearing when it initializes the video card (on 98 when this happens it usually disappears for a split second then comes back). MS were trying to make it boot as quick as possible and also rushed product development so uniform boot logos were probably the last thing on anyone's mind.

98 used to sit there for a minute on some machines if you had Ethernet set to auto and it couldn't get an IP address. There was a way to stop this being an issue but most people never did at least around here as the inclusion of Ethernet wasn't that important till broadband became a thing. There are a heap more quirks like these with 9x

If you don't mind me asking, which generally performs better?

As I said, it entirely depends on your computer's specs. Here are mine, for reference:

  • AMD A8-4500M Quad-Core @ 1.90 GHz
  • 4 GB DDR3L RAM
  • 500 GB 5400 RPM Hitachi HDD
  • AMD Radeon HD 7640G

Most CPUs under 300 MHz (as far as I've tested) work well enough to be usable.

ME logo shows, in reality, but not as long as 98
on real OLD machine (~500 MHz CPU/128 MB RAM) its 5 second tops, as they shortened boot up alot

and if you're virtualising this in modern hw, don't be surprised if its 1 second...
I know 3 years ago I did some modifications on ME in vmw, and it simply booted blazing fast

On my VM Windows 98 actually takes 1 minute to boot

Any luck with editing MSDOS.SYS for BootDelay? Ideally
Code:
BootDelay=5
should give you an extra 5 seconds.
