Well, Bochs has been ported to PSP so it is possible through emulation.

I doubt it. The games will put a good load on it too, I suppose.

It wouldn't wear out the memory stick would it, as running OSes from solid-state devices is generally said to wear them out quickly? Maybe if you disabled paging it would be OK - how much Ram can you use for the emulator? Presumably you can run any version of Windows in Bochs on the PSP but 95 is the one that you always hear of as the newer ones would be too slow.

Hmm, I guess it would be okay on the MemoryStick – assumed you don't run it 24/7. Disabling paging would be an option theoretically, but not practically as the PSP has 32MB of RAM, and you can only give about 8MB or something to that extent to the guest OS.
Yes, you can run almost any Windows version in Bochs as long as you have enough RAM and space, I have run Windows 98 on my PDA which has 64MB of RAM (VM got 16MB of that and I had swapping enabled just to be sure), but it wasn't very fast due to the CPU emulation.

Well, to run it you must have 1.5 PSP firmware installed or a custom firmware. Thats the only reason i haven't done it yet ;)

You mean Bochs exits? This normally means there's an erro in the config files or the configuration is not done correctly.

Aren't there usually different versions of homebrew for 1.00 and 1.50 (because of diffrent exploit code)?

yes, Firmware 1.00 had no protection what so ever (and is also the rarest firmware now, as it is from the original japanese models) so it not needed an exploit.

The 1.50 needed an exploit to run homebrew apps and the easiest way to do this is to split the PBP file. many developers do this for you and contain the files in 2 folders for example: OMGAPP and OMGAPP% . all of the data goes in the OMGAPP and a small 1 kb chunk gets put in the OMGAPP% folder.

All other firmwares need to be downgraded to 1.50. on 2.00 you can run a TIFF image exploit or you upgrade to 2.72 to run a kernel exploit. anything else requires you to update to 3.02 and run the exploit through the ORIGINAL UNMODDED gta:lcs game. 3.10, 3.11, 3.30, and 3.40 cannot be downgraded as there are no known exploits, yet.

You can also use Dark_AleX's Custom firmware (latest: CFW 3.40 OE-A) to run firmware 1.50 code

There are better guides to then what I will tell you
Here is a guide to downgrading different firmware versions

and

here is a guide to running homebrew on a PSP

It is even possible to downgrade from 1.5 firmware to 1.0, i don't really see any benefits.

I would try one of those 3rd party PSP Hard Drives if you are attempting to install an OS, Memory sticks are just not designed for that type of use.

To be honest I don't think it would be a real problem... The days of the 8 megabyte compact flash card are gone...

I know its possible to run it. I've tried with Windows 95 'Chicago'. Unfortunatly the mouse is impossible to use and the Speed is really bad (I didn't expect it to be fast though). Chicago was not that slow so I'm wondering how fast the real 95 runs.

And is there anyone who managed to run Windows 3.1 or lower?

oh it sucks, the mouse is extremely complicated, and the speed is a 386, and the cursor sticks in the corner of the screen

It took a while to boot for me, but it loaded. Sad thing is, I can't control the mouse :(. You're supposed to move it in the opposite direction to the one it's in or something, aren't you, like this:

|-------------------------------¬
| < Mouse in Corner |
| |
| |
| |
| |
| |
| |
----------------------------------

Move mouse:

\| This way

You know it is possible to OC the cpu of the PSP to 333mhz? that does speed things up :) (i thought that was possible in the new hacked firmwares)

I know a guy who did that and the next thing he knew was that his PSP taught on fire - well actually it turned off and we smelled something burning...
