Not much. I'd already tried to get sthg about it. Only wikipedia has some more info:
Quote:
Modular Windows is a special version of Microsoft Windows 3.1, designed to run on the Tandy Video Information System. Microsoft intended Modular Windows to be an embedded operating system for various devices, especially those designed to be connected to televisions. However, the VIS is the only known product that actually used this Windows version.[1] It has been claimed that Microsoft created a new, incompatible version of Modular Windows ("1.1") shortly after the VIS shipped. No products are known to have actually used Modular Windows 1.1.

Quote:
Microsoft aims to be a major player in defining the user interface for interactive services, whether delivered over cable or wireless, onto desktop PCs or TVs. Its first-generation product, Modular Windows, derived from the same API as Win16 (and was promoted to developers as an easy way to leverage mul timedia PC development onto TV-like devices), but it fizzled after being adopted only by Tandy for its VIS player. Microsoft is trying again with new non-Windows technologies, due to appear in pilots and trials this year, says Craig Mundie, vice president of advanced consumer technologies at Microsoft.

He's asking if anyone else had any information, other than what Wikipedia had... 8-)

We don't need to know what you don't need to know, either.

Some of the early DOS programs of Win2.x vintage, actually used Win2.x as a modular loader. Further along, one finds something like DOSSHELL running on a hacked Win30 driver (hint, it has dosx.exe, and it has .GRB files.)

When Windows 3.1 came out, 4M machines were pretty much the norm. I mean, it's pretty much true of most versions of Windows that they run on the very newest and most powerful machines. So a modular win3.x would have been appropriate.

One needs also to remember that at the time, OS/2 loomed large on the horizon, and the separation of Windows into what OS/2 calls protshell and runworkplace, would apply to Windows too. One could, for example, write replacements for the kernel/user/gdi, since these were already Windows programs, (Windows itself lives in something like Win386.exe or Win286.exe).

Of course, it's pretty easy to strip windows down to make a modular version yourself. One of my commissions was to make a version of Windows that fits on a floppy, and just runs solitiare. Well, is'nt that what Windows does?
