MS-DOS 5.0 - Identification of a French installer

Post by Nael »

These are my MS-DOS 5.0 installers with their respective dates:

5.0
English = April 9th, 1991
Portuguese (BR) = August 6th, 1991
Dutch = July 25th, 1991
German = February 3rd, 1990
Japanese = March 10th, 1993
Spanish = July 15th, 1991

5.00A
English = November 11th, 1991
French = November 11th, 1991

Recently I have found another MS-DOS 5.0 installer in French, which came on three floppies and is dated June 5th, 1992.
I don't understand what version is this... maybe it's just a 5.00A so the other French version dated November 11th, 1991 is simply a 5.0?
I'm confused...

This is what I can see after the startups:

The VER /R command always says "Revision A", in both MS-DOS 5.0 and 5.00A, so this doesn't help.
How can I understand what is the version of the French installer I already had?
How can I identify the version of this new French installer (which maybe is an OEM but I don't know how to discover it)?
I would be very grateful if you could help me.

Edit: the 1991 French version was taken from WinWorld and its readme file is a translation of the 5.0 English version, while the readme file of the 1992 French version is a perfect translation of the 5.00A English version.

Actually, the November 11th, 1991 French version is 5.00 non-a, the mislabeling as a is my fault, as I assumed it was a years ago due to the date. What you found is the actual 5.00a French.

Edit: This seems to be an OEM version and it has Windows 3.1's HIMEM.SYS.

Thank you very much, I just saw a WINA20.386 file in the third floppy so I can definitely confirm this is an OEM version.

WINA20.386 comes with every DOS from 5.00 onwards.

Also, could you upload this somewhere, please?

You're right, the text "Zenith Data Systems Corporation" appears in 4 files.
How did you find out about this? I am very curious.

That's very simple to do.
I was just looking for files that aren't present on 'normal' (non-OEM) DOS 5 disks. And there were APPLY.COM, MACHINE.EXE, RTCLOCK.SYS, all with 'Zenith' OEM strings.

Nothing simpler indeed, I didn't think about it. Thank you.
