Post by Jeff »

I remember someone posted this on the old OSBA, and i wanted to see if anyone remembered how to tell if you really have win 1.00. I found this on the net and i wondered if it really was. Heres the nfo file that came with it.

Either install the copy of Windows in a virtual machine and check the version number in the About box, or open the file CGA.LGO from one of the install disks with Notepad and check the version number near the top (although I suppose it might be possible to fake that by changing the file - check the last modified date of the file - my copy of 1.01 says 15 November 1985, 5:42:28 AM).

1.00 is not available on the internet as far as we know - people often mistakenly refer to 1.0x (1.01 to 1.04) versions as 1.00. Someone must have an original copy of it somewhere, but they probably don't realise its significance.

Install windows. If it's buggy beyond usability, then logically, it must be the version with the major bug

Yeah, but if someone was really determined, they could probably get the whole OS to look like the original Windows 1.00 with hex editors. Basically, there doesn't seem to be a way to tell. You could even introduce a big bug.

I suppose to prove it without a doubt you'd need to see the box and disks - any disk images of it on the internet must have come from an original product. I presume it would say 1.00 on the disks somewhere? Can you also maybe tell from the Microsoft part numbers and things like that?

Ah... there was a small hope there
Oh, and also, I found this on Wikipedia-
...few people know that Windows 1.0 was actually never released. Windows 1.0 was the version of Windows that was demonstrated at the '83 Comdex. It would be 14 months until Microsoft eventually released Windows 1.01 - which included some minor bug fixes - to the general public.
Can anyone validate this statement?

That's Interface Manager, which was shown in 1983 - it wasn't even called Windows back then!

Windows 1.0 was never released- but if it was leaked/found, it would hav a huge group of collectors who would want it and from wut I heard microsoft still has the original disks locked up sumwhere in Redmond, along with every build of windows ever made. It would be so cool to hav access 2 sum of these, but u no microsoft on their policies of abandonware. I would really like to get a hold of Macintosh System Beta that was given only to apple developers- a rare piece of history along with the Lisa system. If i could get these, my Apple Beta collection would be complete, besides Mac OS 8 Beta Copland0, sumthin completely different from Mac OS 8.
