Ive just come up with a great idea. Instead of backing up everything to HD's, Im going to backup one ISO/RAR per CD/DVD to minimise loss (unless the RAR/ISO is small then I could fit a few per CD).

This will be especially for the Longhorn, Vista and Whistler builds since these are the most popular. I can then keep them safe in a metal box incase of fire etc. We don't want these files going missing!

Anyone think this is a good idea?

BTW, im still thinking about the CD/DVD postage. Im considering doing it worldwide but I haven't decided yet.

Yeah, this is truly a great idea! :D :D :D I am thinking of doing the same with my Whistler/Longhorn collection when I got my hands on enough CDs/DVDs. To sum it up, I am all for that!

Well the best way to do it is to make sure you get the money for the CD and the postage. That way you don't lose anything but your own time.

Good idea.

And like I said in another post, I'm all up for being a Hub on this side of the world.

You might pay that but whether it costs that much for the DVD plus postage is another matter. If it costs $5 to send, it costs $5 to send, and I won't send it unless I get that. Full stop. I don't mind doing it for no profit but I won't send something out of the money from my own pocket.

The media itself doesn't bother me.

I'll send anything out for free, just aslong as the postage doesn't go over $2.50 AUS, if it goes over, you just have to pay for the postage, nothing else.

Well I want payment for anything sent. I can't afford to do it for free.

First I must say this would be a great idea. The problem is the amount/quality of discs and the space to store those discs....
Now my discs filled everywhere in my room

Actually I did it much earlier before. When I need to store anime DVDISOs, I always burn one playable disc and one data disc (even if it's a DL.) And for some OSes (mostly Vistas, Whistlers and Longhorns) I burn another CD or DVD copies of them.

And yes. International shipping is really expensive (a DL disc with a box costed me almost the same price to buy a Samsung's DL)
Well.....Sure I would pay full postage. But only if I know how to send you the money... :?

For me it would be via PayPal or Cheque (Cheque would be very slow since it has to clear etc).

For the younger peoples who don't have Credit-Cards, or Visa Debitcards, you don't need them if you want to use Paypal, you can link your bank account upto your paypal account if you like. (I have my Bank accounts and VISA linked upto it)

Unlike Andy, I don't plan on doing a Worldwide sending of Media, I only plan on doing it for the Australasia side of the world, E.G: Australia, New Zealand, surrounding island states and countries and etc.

I'm probably not that known in the Beta scene thow, so that may be the problem with some members about the trust part.

Payment types (If the postage costs over $2.50AUS): Australian Money Order, Paypal, and Bank Cheque. As I've had previous problems with Personal checks and the like, they can't be accepted. (Not the first time I've done this type of thing)

EDIT:

Andy, maybe we can discuss this over MSN or something, discuss setting up a small section of a site dedicated to it, would be great to set the details out or something. :)

If we can, it could be easyier to do a real ISO archive and to publish it on torrent or ftp.

Remember that it's illegal to do buissness on beta archive, in europe it is seriously condanable.

So, if you want to share theses archives, do not earn money.

We're not going to be earning money. We're going to be covering the costs of the CD and the postage, thats all.

I would happily send out CD's (DVD burning has never really worked for me) if the shipping and CD was covered, I also don't want to gain anything.

Me and Andy have been talking about it, and I'm currently writing up a Draft Proposal for him to review over.

We'll see in the next couple of days what's going to happen, just have to get everything planned out first.

I'd rather like to have a CD of each beta in usable (and wherever possible bootable) form, but that's a hell of a lot of discs... I like the idea though.

Besides the fact we all want all these betas for our own reasons, whatever they may be, I feel it's important we keep as much of this stuff accessilbe as possible, it feels too easy to lose data these days and I don't want all this stuff to disappear.

Im going to order a 50 pack of DVD-R's some time soon and get to work on this burning malark. Its going to take a fair amount of time so the sooner I start the better I think...

I think a torrent-type of download would be a great idea. It's not that hard to create a torrent server- I have one. :)

with KGB Archiver you can compress 700-1000mb to 2mb, but you have to wait one or two weeks

If it weren't for a corrupt download of Vista last month I'd have actually
uploaded more than downloaded as a result of leaving my machine on
every single night seeding...
I leave it on pretty much 24/7 & shut it down only to test beta's of Vista
or blow the dust out of it once every 2 months,
9 fans tend to collect a crap load of dust....

Last months usage...
