1-Would you consider using ReactOS as your daily operating system? ( when its at a complete/stable stage ) if not ,why not?

2-Would you more inclined to try/use ReactOS if it became a 64 bit operating system?

please take the time to answer these questions

IF you don't know what ReactOS is then: it is a operating system that can/will run most windows applications and games,PLUS its free! , its open source so that means you can LEGALLY modify it as much as you want ( so long as you share your modified code with ReactOS ),no activation, you can install it as many computers as like without breaking the law, etc.

* i changed "main os" to "daily os" because that's what i wanted to know

It's too far behind Windows - ie they're still aiming for it to be usable like XP/Server 2003 but we're already up to 7

I agree.

And they are still aiming for Windows 2000.
It would be fun to use it in a VM, but nothing more, not on a real computer.

They can program all of Windows 7 in there, but then it would lag 20 years behind.

Exactly, plus I've never liked the idea of Linux distros that copy Windows.

1. yes

I intend to use it as my main os as soon as its stable. I persaonnaly use all old software and games (Office 95, Interstate '76 etc.) Although I running 7 Home Basic on my main rig, I would probably install it on my laptop or even my main rig if I get fed-up with 7 enough.

2. no
I persanolly have no use for 64-bit. But I guess a valid reason is lack of compatibility with older applications.

1: Yes

It's a very good project, not a windows killer i think but if they do things right and when a beta arives many people will jump to it to lend them a hand.(see linux for example)

2 : Maybe

I think they first must consentrate on the x86 version then use that code to port it to x64

1) Not as my main OS
Because I am heavily reliant on Windows Apps and nothing can run Windows Apps like windows. However on that note it would be a good idea to have React OS as a back-up and it would also be fun to tinker with.

2) No

1) No. But I'll probably use it for primary OS for my backup PC to run older and legacy apps (that is if ReactOS can run it)
2) No. For 64-bit, I'll have my Windows please.

I will probably play around with it, it seems like an interesting OS.

As for 64-bit I will probably use Windows, Linux or Mac OS

To me, ReactOS is simply a toy, not a serious operating system. If I really need backwards compatibility with some old 16-bit Windows application, I would rather fire up Virtual PC 2007 and virtualize a copy of Windows 98 instead.

Which cost you additional money for the license, unless you're using pirated one ;)

Don't worry, it's an old license from a computer I got a decade ago.

1. Yes. I will use it as a secondary operating system if they keep their current compatibility goal. I'll use it as my Primary OS if they achieve compatibility equal to the newest version of Windows.
2. Yes. My main system uses 6 GB ram. I want to use it all  .

I hope that sometime in the near future, ReactOS will be able to install the .net framework.

Isn't the goal of ReactOS to be compatible with win32 apps, not 16-bit apps?

1. No
2. Definitely not

With support as far behind as it is, what practical use is there for 64-bit support?

1: yes, only because I have systems that I would test it on... not much more...
2: no... my 64 bit capable PC still runs 32 bit... because I have no use for 64 bit, uses more ram, and it breaks some games and alot of apps that I have for my pc...
I would use ReactOS because it would look shiny and different... but PuppyLinux does that for me now (or as of a few minutes ago... LH4074 on my laptop... now for WPA2\TKIP)

1) No. It's a cool project, but in the end it's an open source project completely designed to run Windows applications on a non-Windows system that attempts to replicate Windows. Uhm. What? Why would I want to run Windows apps on a Windows clone? With licenses of Windows so easily obtained - they come with almost all new computers, and those tech savvy enough to build their own can easily get them elsewhere for free - I don't see the point of it.
2) No, but it should be added for those who would use it.

1) No, but as a secondary OS, yes, just to experiment. I wouldn't consider using it as my main unless there is a unique, easy-to-use GUI.

2) No, I don't have a 64-bit processor.

wow, thanks for all the replies, i think i need to clarify a few points:

ReactOS is NOT linux, yes it uses some w.i.n.e code but it is definitely not linux

As for compatability, Reactos is aiming for a windows 2003 compatable kernel
and a windows 7 userland ( in other words the goal is for ReactOS to be able to run most windows 7 apps )

The gui: i agree that the ReactOS gui is VERY basic and outdated, even the new explorer is a improvement but it will be outdated too, if im honest the main users of ReactOS ( in my opinion ) will be educational centers and business that can't afford a windows license so therefore they only need a basic gui.

"i will use it to run my old 16 bit games and apps", sorry but "no you won't" cause ReactOS does not and will not support 16 bit software.

.net support is coming, i dont have a end date but i know its being worked on

"i can't play my favorite game on ReactOS" that's a fair statement, its not of high importance to me BUT it is a important issue to the ReactOS project, plus of course, some applications rely on directx to work!, simply put,it comes down to human effort, if ReactOS had more coders than ReactX could be completed more quickly

64 bit support: it is possible to create a 64 bit version of ReactOS already BUT the g.c.c compiler for 64 code is unreliable and erratic, as soon as the g.c.c compiler improves there will be a 64 bit version of ReactOS, there is also work happening at the moment to get the ReactOS code to compile in MSVC, this work is nearly complete.

"why is development so slow" what the ReactOS developers don't tell you is that some of them are using the ReactOS project as a learning tool so therefore they are not in a hurry to complete the project ( which is fair enough, no one is paying them for their time and effort so therefore they work at their own pace), of course if ReactOS had more coders that would speed things up too !

anyways keep those replies coming :D

I'd love to use ReactOS as my main OS, but I haven't a machine to test it on right now, so I can't find out if it has what I need.

1) No. I still use Windows XP Pro on every system here (P3 700mhz, 256mb RAM - AMD 3200+ 1gb RAM), and all the systems at work (Pentium 3, 1ghz - 2.4ghz Core 2 Duo, 2gb ram) Windows XP works, why should I use some free piece of crap when I get Windows with my computer?

2) No, I don't care about 64bit.
