Long story short: Laptop fan disconnected thus laptop overheated and shutdown while updating. System restores done nothing so its time to format! Yay! -_-

Got about 30-40GB of data on C to move elsewhere temporarily except I cant get to Documents and Settings via Ubuntu. Properties>Permissions says "You are not the owner so you cannot change these permissions"

How can I fix this? I can boot into Vista but browsing folders is pretty much out of the question

E: already done repair Vista installs to no avail

In Vista the documents and settings folder is only a sort of link.
There is nothing in it.

You will need to backup the USERS folder.

Try it with a BartPE disk to access your files.

Yeah, I've only got two laptops, that, and the Thinkpad which definetly won't run Vista

Like DjRob said, it is only a link to the "users" folder to provide support for legacy programs not an actual folder.
