4093 because it's the last build that leaked before MS decided to restart the whole thing.

I was gonna say 4074... but I wasn't sure if I was saying it because it's the build I'm most familiar with... I do like it though.

It goes against the grain somewhat, seeing as it's what most people see as one of the worst builds, but 5048 will always be special for me as it was the first Longhorn that I actually got and experienced hands-on (after ages seeing screenshots of the 4xxx builds and trying to find that elusive download!). You never forget your first Longhorn :P

As for the actual best build, the older ones that were the "real" Longhorn like what you see in that video that some say was produced by Microsoft (I kinda doubt that it was, but it's still really cool) are awesome, like 3718 or even 4074 - if they hadn't run into problems and given up after 4074 then who knows what we would have now...? I just looked up the screenshots of 4093 as I remember seeing them before and thinking it was amazing when it was released, and I really wish Vista was like that (but without the bugginess of 4093 of course). I'm excited about upgrading to Vista on one hand, but at the same time a bit disappointed, as I think it could have been so much more (and it feels a bit unfinished in my view). For example, why did they use the old 95-style control panels for most of Control Panel, instead of these new-style ones (that they used for a few of the Vista ones, so making it feel really inconsistent): http://img144.imageshack.us/my.php?imag ... cplvl7.jpg

Also I think the Longhorn development process was fascinating, as it was nothing like the development of most Windows versions (normally they don't introduce lots of new features/interfaces etc in the betas and then drop them again before the RTM, and there's no normally beta builds that are nothing like either the previous version of Windows or the final version of the next one - LH 3/4xxx could almost be seen as betas of an unreleased version of Windows, as opposed to Vista betas), and the builds before Beta 1 give a great insight into it. The way the development of Longhorn was completely restarted also interests me a lot too - I can't imagine what the day at Microsoft must have been like when the very last 4xxx build came out of the build labs and it was finally decided that the last 2 years' work would be binned...

The late builds were fairly stable and the errors could be easily fixed no bother, see if MS seen it as a buisness oppatunity they could release it as say longhorn, or XP2 or something, then start on Vista.

Totally R2, it's interesting how it's progressed, how that much work got binned, how many features were almost there, then they vanished... it's been exciting though, if a litte disappointing in patches.

3706 and 4053.

3706, because...go hunt through it, you will soon see.
4053, because I got it to run nicely on a PI 233, 198MB Ram system.

4008, I like the blue theme and the names of programs are in the middle of title bar, not left.

Eh? Over Windows 3.1?! Where's the awesomeness of Progman in OS X? The 16 bit wholesomeness that is Fileman? Those gorgeous BSoDs that just make your day, appearing just when you least expect them? The insanely stable and secure underpinnings of DOS, the ultimate foundation for the legend that is 3.11 for Workgroups, the ultimate pinnacle of computing the way it's meant to be? Admit it, 3.x is the best OS and is the best that there ever will be, no question about it.

;)
