I have been trying to use the CDINSTALL.IMA to install Windows NT 3.1 (because it is a more direct installation and would make Setup a shorter process); but it only comes with SCSI CDROM drivers. I have been searching for an ATAPI IDE CDROM driver for the setup process and the closest I have found to a working driver is a driver developed by Aztech avaliable here. However, this driver makes setup bomb out as apparently it uses SCSI ID 0 or 1 (most likely 0), which is reserved by Setup as used for SCSI hard drives. I found another driver developed by Aztech avaliable here, which reserves SCSI ID 3 for the IDE CDROM; but this driver only works with a certain Aztech IDE CDROM drive. I suppose the first driver would enable IDE CD-ROM support in an already-installed version of NT 3.1; but it doesn't work with the CDINSTALL.IMA. If anyone could help me, I would give you my thanks.

(BTW; I have already tried "ABIOSDSK.SYS" and "ATDISK.SYS"; they did not work. Also, you do not have to have an ISO of NT 3.1 to get this to work; you just need it to get past the screen to set keyboard layout, etc without it erroring (and for the case of no NT 3.1 ISO, a message to ask for the CD would count as a success). Integrating the first driver into the CDINSTALL.IMA (modify TXTSETUP.INF) makes it autodetect the driver, but it of course makes setup bomb out.)

Find information at the usual place; if you wish to code a driver, developers' comments are at the bottom of the page.

EDIT: Sorry, I must have read right over "NT". Ignore this post.

People say that there are better ones out there but I always just use the driver that comes on the 98 boot floppy, it always works fine for me. I don't remember if it will work on different versions of DOS or not, I don't think you'll have a problem though. You also need to make sure you have mscdex somewhere, if not I've included it in the zip file. Just put both of these files in your root directory. If you want to put them in a CD folder or within your DOS folder you just need to add that to right before the filenames in the following lines.

Add the following line to your config.sys file.
Code:
device=oakcdrom.sys /D:mscd001

Add the following line to your autoexec.bat file. "/L:D" specifies the drive letter is "D:". If you want it to change, for example, to "E:" you would change that part to "/L:E". It's pretty simple.
Code:
MSCDEX.EXE /D:mscd001 /L:D

Here are the two files you need: http://bitsurge.net/files/98SECD.zip

QuiescentWonder, he's asking for a generic CDROM driver for NT 3.1 not DOS.

I feel i must say something about this.

I checked everything to do with "old drivers" and there is nothing universal there; looks like something will have to be hand coded or i need to use the winnt.exe from DOS (which isn't an ideal solution but it probably will be the route i will have to go down).
