Alright, I've done this once before on an older model (Dell Latitude C600) by shorting two pins on the NVRAM chip, which cleared enough out for me to boot into the BIOS and reset and unlock all the passwords. My old boss had someone mess with her laptop (Dell Inspiron 1521) and set a BIOS power-on password. Dell wants to charge her $250 to remove it, from what I can tell there isn't really any information on resetting the password NVRAM chip on this motherboard online...

I have the motherboard out and I think I've found the chip but there are places that claim it doesn't work on newer models but they don't provide any explanation. Also, I tried looking all the numbers on the IC up online and Google doesn't know about it, so I'm guessing it's something Dell has manufactured specifically for them?

Does anyone have any idea how I can get by this password?

You could try removing the battery as with a desktop motherboard but you would have to dismantle the laptop unfortunately as they never seem to be accessible from any of the hatches.

Laptops don't work like that, unfortunately. Removing the battery resets the BIOS but it doesn't reset any passwords. The passwords are stored in a separate non-volatile RAM chip.

Hmm strange, it worked with an old one I had... Maybe they didn't think of it back then ;)

Yeah, I don't really know how long it's been around, at least 7-8 years with Dell anyway.

I would try shorting the EEPROM, even if there is little info about it online. It shouldn't hurt.

The problem is finding it, I don't want to short pins on the wrong chip. I guess tomorrow I'll be getting out the flatbed scanner so I can try to figure out which chips are what.

Hi,

Funny that you write, i'm sitting with excaly the same, exept my model is a Dell Latitude D505.

I get this ugly white screen after boot about that i need to enter a password.

I read on several pages, that i could use a master password to get arround it.. except.. if your model is 595b.. wich.. mine offcourse is.. (i have the files to generate the master password from the mod nr. if you want it)

My next step is a bit harder, because that means that i need to short the chip, and reload some stuff.. .. look at:

http://translate.google.com/translate?p ... ry_state0=

However, when i try to short the chip and then turn on the machine.. notthing happneds..

I'm now looking after a english guide.. that would help alot.

What have you tried so faar ?

The model that I had to short the chip on where it worked was a C640. It took me six or seven tries and I believe that the pins it told me to short online were wrong, so I ended up trying all sorts of combinations before it worked. There are some very long and detailed threads on forums in English, I think they're on TechSpot somewhere.

EDIT: That's a C640 not C600, sorry about that.
Here is a picture of where the chip is on the C640.

The only other time I had to reset a BIOS password on one of these it was running the older BIOS (that didn't end in 595B) and there is a master password generator program floating around on the Internet somewhere that actually gave me a password. So lesson learned: Do not update the BIOS if you have an old Dell.

I used to work for Dell and if you can confirm ownership they will be able to give you a master password.
